The magic of Christmas at the foot of the castle
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of Abruzzo, in the province of Chieti, the medieval village of Roccascalegna hosts its Christmas Markets every year, one of the most evocative events of the Val di Sangro festive season. The cobblestone streets of the historic center are dressed for the occasion, illuminated by warm lights and decorations, leading visitors on a path that climbs from the Town Hall square up to the old rectory, always with a view of the majestic Castle of Roccascalegna.
The event draws much of its charm from the Castle of Roccascalegna, one of the most photographed medieval fortresses in Abruzzo. Built on a rocky spur overlooking the village, the castle dominates the Rio Secco valley and, during the markets, remains open with extended evening hours, allowing visitors to admire the festive lights of the town from above. Its silhouette, suspended between sky and rock, serves as a natural backdrop for the entire event.
Along the village streets, you will find stalls dedicated to artistic craftsmanship and local products, with exhibitors showcasing handmade Christmas decorations and traditional items. There is no shortage of food stands and street food, where you can taste Abruzzese specialties accompanied by mulled wine and festive sweets.
The Roccascalegna Christmas Markets are designed for all ages: between shows, concerts, and entertainment for children, the atmosphere invites families to enjoy a climate of authentic Christmas conviviality. Strolling through the village streets, with the scents of winter and the charm of the stone houses, is an experience that combines tradition, taste, and the magic of the holidays.
The municipality of Roccascalegna, nestled in the hinterland of the province of Chieti, in Abruzzo, is famous above all for its castle, but it also preserves an authentic village and streets rich in history. The markets represent the ideal opportunity to discover this corner of the region away from the most beaten tourist paths, immersed in the tranquility of the Abruzzo hills as they prepare for winter.
The 2026 edition of the Roccascalegna Christmas Markets does not yet have official dates. By checking this page later, you will be able to find the times, program, and information on castle visits as soon as the Municipality of Roccascalegna and the organization make them known.
Roccascalegna can be reached by car from the Val di Sangro exit of the A14 motorway, continuing inland along the road that climbs the valley. The village is about an hour from Chieti and Pescara.
During the markets, the Castle of Roccascalegna can be visited with extended hours until the evening. The entrance ticket is 4 euros, reduced to 3 euros with a guided tour. Access to the markets and the village area is free.
We recommend wearing clothing suitable for the winter climate and comfortable footwear for the sloping cobblestone streets of the historic center. The stands are scheduled to open starting at 10:00 AM.
