About Granone Festival

For over a century, at the beginning of September, the Maiella district of Agnone celebrates Our Lady of Libera with three days of festivities blending the sacred and the profane. The Granone Festival is the gastronomic heart of the event, featuring polenta, corn pizza, and typical corn-based dishes, accompanied by concerts, flag-wavers, the Palio della Cuccagna (a traditional race) between the five districts, and on September 8th, the procession and fireworks with the burning of the church.

A district festival running since 1903

In the Maiella district of Agnone, in the province of Isernia, the Feast of Our Lady of Libera has been a tradition renewed since 1903, intertwining religious devotion and popular celebration. For three days at the beginning of September, the district comes alive with music, gastronomy, and competitions involving the entire community of Agnone.

The Granone Festival

The gastronomic heart is the Granone Festival, dedicated to corn: polenta, corn pizza, and traditional peasant dishes served at the district's stands. Alongside the food, the program includes concerts, DJ sets, the performance of flag-wavers, and the Palio della Cuccagna, a challenge that divides the town into five factions.

The procession and the burning of the church

The most solemn moment is the procession of Our Lady of Libera on September 8th, followed by a fireworks display with the evocative burning of the Maiella church. The festival is organized by the youth association La Repubblica di Maiella, which manages the program and events each year.

Granone Festival — edition 2026
