A patronal feast in the heart of the Majella

The Sant'Eustachio Patronal Feast is the most cherished event of the year in Campo di Giove, a small mountain village in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, nestled at the foot of the southwestern slopes of the Majella and within the Majella National Park. Every year, around September 20th—the day the Church commemorates Saint Eustace Placidus—the community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together faith, memory, and folk tradition.

Devotion to Saint Eustace in Campo di Giove is ancient: a papal document from 1183 already mentions the village's Ecclesia Sancti Eustachii. The saint's legend is tied to the vision of a white stag with a glowing cross between its antlers, an image that makes him one of the most evocative protectors in Christian tradition. The festival is often associated with Saint Roch as well, and celebrations traditionally span several days, typically from September 19th to 21st.

The bond with transhumance

What makes this festival special is its deep connection to the pastoral culture of Abruzzo. Historically, the event coincided with the end of summer in the mountains, when shepherds prepared for transhumance, the migration of flocks toward the Tavoliere delle Puglie along the tratturi, the great grassy paths of pastoralism. The festival was therefore a moment of farewell and well-wishing before the long journey, a spirit that lives on in the traditional dances and songs that accompany the celebrations.

Rites and atmosphere

The religious heart of the festival takes place at the Church of Sant'Eustachio, with liturgical celebrations in honor of the patron saint. Alongside the sacred moments, the streets of the historic center, rich in medieval and Renaissance architecture, come alive with folk music, gatherings, and conviviality. The event is also an opportunity to rediscover the village's mountain cuisine, featuring soups, polenta, and typical Abruzzese dishes.
