Christmas lights up in Castel di Sangro

Every year, in the heart of the Alto Sangro region, the town of Castel di Sangro (province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo) dresses up to host the Santa Claus Village, one of the most cherished Christmas events in the Abruzzo hinterland. Festive lights and scenic decorations illuminate the streets of the historic center, while Piazza Plebiscito becomes the hub of a magical journey designed for both adults and children.

A village born from solidarity

The heart of the event is the Figlia di Sion Community, an organization dedicated to supporting young people facing difficult times. It is the members of this community who build and animate the village's settings, in partnership with the Pro Loco and the municipal administration. This project combines the magic of Christmas with a strong social purpose, giving the city an event that fosters identity and community participation.

The village attractions

The interactive path leads visitors through meticulously detailed settings. Among the most popular attractions are the Enchanted Forest, the evocative Mine with its tunnel, the train that transports coal, the bear's den, and, of course, Santa's House, where children can meet the star of the holidays. The village also features a nativity scene with live animals, Christmas markets showcasing local crafts and produce, face painting, and numerous gastronomic events in the square. Each year, the displays are enriched with new surprise settings.

Lights, fire, and music

The opening of the village is traditionally marked by the lighting of the Christmas displays and a pyromusical show that weaves together lights, fire, and music, drawing thousands of people to Piazza Plebiscito. Thanks to seasonal tourist trains that reach Castel di Sangro during the holidays, the village attracts visitors from all over Abruzzo and neighboring regions.
