About Podolica Veal Festival

For over half a century, Santo Stefano del Sole, a small Irpinian town at the gateway to the Picentini Mountains, has been firing up the grills for its most iconic festival. In the town squares, two whole Podolica-breed calves are slow-roasted on spits for over twelve hours, watched by thousands of visitors. Surrounding the spits are stalls showcasing the thousand flavors of Podolica beef, caciocavallo cheese, local Irpinian wines, and folk music that keeps the party going until late at night.

An Irpinian tradition spanning over half a century

The Whole Spit-Roasted Podolica Veal Festival is the signature event of Santo Stefano del Sole, a town of just over two thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, in the heart of Irpinia and inland Campania. It originated from the local farmers' custom of offering a calf to the community during the patron saint's festivities, and has since grown into one of the most recognizable gastronomic events in the Campanian Apennines. The 51st edition was celebrated in 2024, and the 52nd in 2025: always in the last week of August, always with the same ritual.

The spit: over twelve hours of fire in the square

The heart of the festival is a slow and spectacular liturgy. At dawn on the main day, around 8:00 AM, the fires are lit in Piazza Oscar Brini: two whole Podolica calves, opened and salted on the inside so the heat penetrates evenly, are placed on spits and turned for over twelve hours in front of the embers. It is a collective effort, entrusted to teams of volunteers who take shifts throughout the day while the town fills with the scent of wood and meat. The opening of the spits, around 8:00 PM, is the most anticipated moment of the year: the meat is served hot in stuffed sandwiches and seasoned strips, distributed continuously until it runs out.

The thousand flavors of Podolica veal

Alongside the spit-roast, the festival offers a complete showcase of the Podolica breed, a rustic cattle raised in the wild on the pastures of the Southern Apennines and appreciated for its flavorful meat and the milk used to make excellent cheese. In the food stalls, which in recent editions have been named «Fire, Iron, and Meat» and «The Thousand Flavors of Podolica Veal», you will usually find:

  • durum wheat pasta with Podolica meat sauce;
  • genovese sauce and braised Podolica beef;
  • meatballs, chops, and fried dishes from the Irpinian peasant tradition;
  • grilled meat prepared on the spot;
  • the famous Podolica caciocavallo, the signature cheese of this breed;
  • great wines of the province, from Fiano di Avellino to Taurasi.

Music, squares, and conviviality

The festival goes beyond the table. The opening evening almost always concludes with a concert in the square dedicated to folk music and Southern sounds: recent editions have featured the bottari of the popular cantica with Stany Roggiero, the Battista Band, and the group Sciaraball. It is a village festival in the truest sense, where local families and visitors from all over Campania share the same tables until late at night.

Part of the Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr

The festival is not an isolated event: it is part of the festivities in honor of Saint Vitus the Martyr, the town's patron saint, which are celebrated in Santo Stefano del Sole in the last week of August to commemorate the arrival of the sacred relics in 1814. Masses, processions, brass band concerts, and fireworks accompany the gastronomic days, in that blend of popular devotion and food culture typical of Southern Italian festivals. The organization is handled by the Saint Vitus the Martyr Festival Committee, together with the San Vito Podolica Veal Association and the Municipality of Santo Stefano del Sole.

Gourmet cuisine in the square and charity

In some editions, the event has hosted renowned chefs and leading names in Campanian dining, who brought Podolica-based dishes to the square at popular prices, working for free with proceeds donated to community projects. This model of «gourmet cuisine in the square» has made the festival known far beyond the borders of Irpinia and explains why the event is considered a case study in the promotion of an indigenous breed.

Santo Stefano del Sole, gateway to the Picentini Mountains

At an altitude of 547 meters, overlooking the Sabato Valley, the town of Santo Stefano del Sole serves as one of the gateways to the Picentini Mountains Regional Park. Chestnut woods, springs, and trails frame the festival and make the trip interesting even during the day, when the spit has been turning for hours but the real party will only begin at sunset. Those arriving in Irpinia during these days find a territory in full season: Fiano and Greco vineyards, hillside villages, and a network of festivals that animate the entire month of August.

Podolica Veal Festival — edition 2026

As of late July 2026, the organizers have not yet released the official dates for the new edition of the Whole Spit-Roasted Podolica Veal Festival. The municipal summer program «Vivi Santo Stefano 2026» schedules the Saint Vitus the Martyr festivities from August 26th to 30th: it is within that window that, as tradition dictates, the fires are expected to be lit in Piazza Oscar Brini. The program, schedule, and musical guests will be published by the Saint Vitus the Martyr Festival Committee.

2026 Edition: dates not yet official

For the 2026 edition of the Whole Spit-Roasted Podolica Veal Festival in Santo Stefano del Sole, there are currently no confirmed dates from the organizers. The only institutional reference available is the municipal summer program, «Vivi Santo Stefano 2026», which indicates the Saint Vitus the Martyr festivities from August 26th to 30th, 2026, without detailing the gastronomic days. Since the festival has always taken place within that week, it is reasonable to expect that the spit will turn in Piazza Oscar Brini on one of the days within that window this year as well.

What to expect

The event structure has been repeated for decades: a first evening dedicated to food stalls featuring Podolica flavors and live music, and a second day marked by the lighting of the fires early in the morning, lunch with Podolica meat specialties, and the evening opening of the spits. However, until the Saint Vitus the Martyr Festival Committee publishes the official program, times and guests remain to be confirmed.

How to stay updated

Definitive information is usually released by the Saint Vitus the Martyr Festival Committee, the San Vito Podolica Veal Association, and the Municipality of Santo Stefano del Sole, in the province of Avellino, in the weeks immediately preceding the event. We recommend checking before traveling.
