A spring celebration of taste in the Alta Val di Cecina, featuring Marzuolo truffles and Tuscan culinary excellence.
As the villages of the Pisa province awaken after winter, Volterra officially opens the gourmet season with the Marzuolo Truffle Market Exhibition, the spring highlight of the Volterragusto festival. For an entire weekend, the historic center of this Etruscan city transforms into a showcase of Alta Val di Cecina excellence, with the Marzuolo truffle as the undisputed star. The initiative is organized by the Alta Val di Cecina Truffle Hunters Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Volterra, with the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra and the Volterra Valdicecina Tourist Consortium.
The Tuber borchii Vittadini, known as the Marzuolo or 'bianchetto' truffle, matures between late winter and early spring in the woods of the Alta Val di Cecina. With its intense, slightly garlicky aroma, it is the perfect ingredient to elevate the simplest traditional Tuscan dishes. During the exhibition, visitors can purchase it fresh directly from the truffle hunters and discover perfect pairings with local products.
The heart of the event is the evocative Logge del Palazzo Pretorio in Piazza dei Priori, where exhibitors offer a selection of local specialties for sale and tasting:
One of the most anticipated moments is the Giovane Jarro Award, the spring edition of the prestigious recognition conferred by Volterragusto to great food and wine communicators. The award celebrates young professionals who have distinguished themselves in promoting and disseminating food culture and is presented in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio of the Palazzo dei Priori.
Visiting the Marzuolo Truffle Market Exhibition also means immersing yourself in the history of one of Tuscany's most fascinating cities. Between tastings, you can stroll along the Etruscan walls, admire the Acropolis, the Roman Theatre, and the famous alabaster workshops, discovering why Volterra has always been a beloved destination for those seeking culture, landscapes, and fine dining.
