An evening of authentic South Tyrolean folk music in the heart of Tirolo
The Volksmusikabend (Folk Music Evening) is one of the most sincere events on the cultural calendar of Tirolo (Tirol), a small town perched above Merano, in the province of Bolzano and the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every year, at the beginning of autumn, the Vereinshaus at Hauptstraße 31 opens its doors for an evening entirely dedicated to Volksmusik, the folk music that has accompanied the life of South Tyrolean communities for generations.
The stars of the show are South Tyrolean Volksmusikanten, singers, and dancers (Volksmusikanten, Sänger und Tänzer aus Südtirol): small instrumental groups, polyphonic choirs, and folk dance troupes take turns to offer an authentic, unadulterated repertoire. Accordions, guitars, harps, zithers, and brass instruments weave traditional melodies, while Tyrolean songs and typical dances turn the hall into a village living room. It is an evening designed to bring musicians and the audience together directly, without barriers.
The event is promoted by the Südtiroler Volksmusikverein, the South Tyrolean association for folk music, through its Burggrafenamt section (the Merano district). The association, based in Bolzano, is dedicated to protecting and transmitting the Alpine musical heritage, supporting young musicians and singers, and organizing meetings, courses, and evenings like this throughout the territory.
The Volksmusikabend has free admission and requires no booking: anyone can attend, from long-time enthusiasts to visitors curious to discover the musical traditions of the Burgraviato. It is the ideal opportunity for those staying in Tirolo or nearby Merano to experience an authentic local evening, quite different from concerts designed for the tourist crowd.
The village of Tirolo, which gave its name to the entire historical region of Tyrol, is famous for Castel Tirolo and its panoramic position above the Merano basin. The folk music evening fits naturally into this context, where German-speaking customs coexist with the Italian soul of South Tyrol, representing a living piece of local cultural identity.
The date for the 2026 edition is confirmed: Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 8:30 PM, at the Vereinshaus in Tirolo (Hauptstraße 31). The evening, with free admission and no booking required, is organized by the Südtiroler Volksmusikverein through its Burggrafenamt section.
As in previous editions, instrumental groups, choirs, and folk dance troupes from South Tyrol will take turns on stage for an evening of authentic Volksmusik. The detailed list of participating groups and singers will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
