The Nebrodi truffle takes centre stage in autumn in Capizzi
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Nebrodi Truffle Festival, titled "Truffle Among the Flavours of Autumn", is the most anticipated food and wine event in Capizzi, a small town in the province of Messina perched at an altitude of over 1,100 metres in the heart of the Nebrodi Park. Every autumn, the village transforms into a grand culinary trail dedicated to the truffle, the iconic product of this mountainous Sicilian region.
Capizzi is officially recognised as one of Italy's Truffle Cities. Its forests of beech, oak, and hazel trees are home to several prized species, from the scorzone (summer black truffle, Tuber aestivum) to the winter black truffle (Tuber brumale), as well as the mesentericum and the bianchetto (Tuber borchii). The festival was created to celebrate this natural wealth and the local economy surrounding truffle hunting, a practice still carried out by local truffle hunters today.
The heart of the festival lies in the tastings: fresh grated truffle paired with local cheeses, cured meats, extra virgin olive oil, and other typical Nebrodi products. Gastronomic stalls, local craft markets, and mycological exhibitions line the streets of the historic centre, while taste workshops and show cooking sessions demonstrate how to use truffles in the kitchen.
The event is also a perfect opportunity to discover Capizzi and its monuments, particularly the Sanctuary of San Giacomo Maggiore, considered one of the oldest Jacobean churches on the island. Organised by the local Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality of Capizzi, the festival combines culinary promotion, the enhancement of the Nebrodi landscape, and the rediscovery of the traditions of this corner of the province of Messina, in Sicily.
The Nebrodi Truffle Festival will return to Capizzi in October 2026, confirming the autumn appointment dedicated to the truffle of the Nebrodi Park. At the moment, the exact dates and the programme for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organisers. As per tradition, truffle and local product tastings, markets along the historic centre streets, conferences, woodland excursions, and folk performances are expected. The detailed programme will be released by the Pro Loco of Capizzi on official channels closer to the event.
Capizzi is located in the Nebrodi hinterland, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exits towards Sant'Agata di Militello or Santo Stefano di Camastra), then continuing along the inland roads towards the Nebrodi mountains; from the Ionian side, you can drive up from Catania-Bronte. A car is recommended due to the village's mountain location.
Admission to the event is generally free; tastings and products at the stalls are available for purchase. Opening hours and the detailed programme are published by the organisers on their official social media channels closer to the event.
