A stunning living nativity scene set in the medieval alleys of one of Italy's most beautiful villages
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Madonie mountains, in the Province of Palermo, the village of Gangi hosts the "From Nazareth to Bethlehem" living nativity every year, one of the most celebrated Nativity representations in Sicily. The entire medieval historic center of Gangi becomes a grand open-air stage, where alleys, staircases, courtyards, and ancient stone dwellings serve as the backdrop for life in Palestine two thousand years ago.
Visitors follow a path that winds through the ancient Santa Lucia district, Piazza del Popolo, and iconic landmarks like the Ventimiglia Tower and the Mother Church of San Nicolรฒ. Along the way, a dozen scenes come to life: the market, the tavern, artisan workshops, washerwomen, shepherds, and traditional trades. The most intense moments include the appearance of the Angel and the journey that gives the event its name, culminating at the Nativity grotto reconstructed near the tower.
The event involves over 200 performers in period costumes, supported by numerous volunteers dedicated to organization and logistics. Established in 2010 by the Youth Forum, the production has grown with each edition under the direction of Carmelo Domina and Peppuccio Ballistreri, who refine the scenes and introduce new elements every year.
Awarded the title of "Most Beautiful Village in Italy" in 2014, Gangi offers an authentic medieval setting that enhances the atmosphere of the living nativity, which also received the ITALIVE 2017 recognition. The stone architecture of the village, perched on a hill in the Madonie, makes the experience unique and cements its status as one of the most important events in the Sicilian Region.
The Gangi living nativity attracts thousands of visitors from across Sicily and beyond; the 2025 edition exceeded 7,000 attendees, a new record. Due to the high demand, entry is by reservation only via the official event website.
The organizers have not yet published the official dates for the 2026 edition. Based on previous years, the Gangi living nativity is expected during the Christmas period, tentatively between December 26 and 29, with evening performances along the alleys of the historic center. Final dates, times, and reservation openings will be announced on presepeviventegangi.com.
Gangi is located in the heart of the Madonie, in the Province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (exit Tre Monzelli or Irosa), continuing along the Madonie state roads. The village is approximately two hours from both Palermo and Catania.
Admission is by mandatory reservation via the official website presepeviventegangi.com. The event sells out every year: booking well in advance is highly recommended.
Wear comfortable shoes to navigate the alleys and staircases of the historic center. Dress in layers: in December, evening temperatures in the Madonie can be quite cold.
