The oldest historical re-enactment in Sicily, in the heart of Nicosia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Charles V Historical Pageant in Nicosia is one of the most deeply rooted commemorative events in Sicily: established in 1993, it is considered the oldest historical re-enactment on the island. Every year, the historic center of Nicosia, an ancient town in the province of Enna in the heart of Sicily, transforms into a grand open-air stage where dozens of participants in fine period costumes bring the 16th century back to life.
The event commemorates the visit of Emperor Charles V to Nicosia, which traditionally took place on August 22, 1535, while the sovereign was crossing Sicily on his return from the victorious expedition against Tunis, heading toward Messina. On that occasion, the city was awarded the honorary title of Civitas Constantissima, a designation that gives the full name to the re-enactment, "Charles V visits Nicosia Civitas Constantissima." The event weaves together historical memory and civic identity, highlighting an episode that has become part of local legend.
The heart of the event is the grand costumed procession that parades along the main streets and squares of Nicosia's historic center. Featuring ladies, nobles, men-at-arms, dignitaries, and commoners, the procession culminates in the re-enactment of the presentation of the city keys to the Emperor and the reading of the Imperial Privilege. The parade is accompanied by drums, trumpets, and the art of flag-waving, performed by the Civitas Nicosiae Flag-wavers and Musicians group, who serve as ambassadors of Nicosian tradition even beyond the city limits.
Recognized among the historical re-enactments of Sicily, the event is organized by the Corteo Storico Carlo V Cultural Association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Nicosia, and involves local associations, historical groups, and volunteers. The pageant represents a major attraction for Nicosia and the province of Enna, successfully combining spectacle, historical costume research, and the promotion of the village's rich architectural heritage, from its monumental churches to the squares of the old town.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Charles V Historical Pageant in Nicosia have not yet been announced by the organizers. The event, considered the oldest historical re-enactment in Sicily, has taken place in autumn in recent years within the historic center of Nicosia, in the province of Enna.
Maintaining tradition, the edition is expected to feature the grand procession in period costumes, the re-enactment of the presentation of the city keys to Charles V, the reading of the Imperial Privilege, and performances by the Civitas Nicosiae Flag-wavers and Musicians. The detailed program will be published by the Corteo Storico Carlo V Cultural Association closer to the event.
The re-enactment takes place in the historic center of Nicosia (EN), throughout the main streets and squares of the town, in the heart of inland Sicily.
Nicosia can be reached by car via the SS117 and SS120 roads; it is about an hour from Enna. It is recommended to park near the center and continue on foot along the procession route.
