The patronal feast of Termeno in the courtyard of the Church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta
The Village Festival of Termeno sulla strada del vino (in German Tramin an der Weinstraße), in the heart of the Bassa Atesina area in the province of Bolzano, is the village's patronal feast dedicated to Saints Quirico and Giulitta, the patrons of the parish church. In the local dialect, the event is known as Traminer Kirchtig and is deeply rooted in the community's traditions: every June 16th, an appointment that blends religious devotion with local conviviality is renewed.
The heart of the festival is the majestic parish church of Saints Quirico and Giulitta, recognizable from afar by its 86-meter brick bell tower, the tallest brick bell tower in Tyrol. Inside, the choir preserves a vast cycle of early 15th-century frescoes depicting the Stories of Saints Quirico and Giulitta, mother and son martyrs of the 4th century. The current building, in neo-Gothic style with three naves designed by Franz Mayr, dates back to 1911 and stands on the site of an older church. The festival was created specifically to celebrate the titular patrons of this church.
The day begins with the solemn Holy Mass at 6:00 PM in the parish church. Afterward, around 7:15 PM, the church courtyard (the Kirchhof) transforms into the center of the festivities: locals and guests gather around food stalls featuring typical South Tyrolean specialties and drinks, while folk music and traditional dances fill the air. The festival is organized by the football section of ASV Tramin, which handles hospitality and catering.
The atmosphere is that of a genuine South Tyrolean village festival: the musical group Backblech performs, while the dancers of the Traminer Schuhplattler and a children's folk dance group showcase the Schuhplattler, the characteristic Tyrolean dance featuring rhythmic slapping on shoes and leather breeches. It is an authentic opportunity to experience the traditions of the Termeno community, one of the iconic villages along the South Tyrol Wine Road in Trentino-Alto Adige.
The Village Festival offers free admission and is aimed at both local residents and visitors and wine tourists traveling along the wine road. It is a perfect stop to discover the most traditional side of Termeno, amidst popular faith, gastronomy, and alpine folklore.
