The great neighborhood bonfires held on the evening of November 24th in Santa Caterina Villarmosa, in honor of the patron saint, Catherine of Alexandria.
The "Vampe di Santa Caterina" are among the oldest and most evocative folk traditions of Santa Caterina Villarmosa, a town in the Province of Caltanissetta nestled in the hills of inland Sicily. On the evening of November 24th, the eve of the liturgical feast of Catherine of Alexandria—the Alexandrian virgin and martyr who gives the town its name and serves as its patron saint—the town's neighborhoods illuminate the night with large bonfires lit in her honor.
The true protagonists of this ritual are the local youths, divided by neighborhood and district. In the days and weeks leading up to the festival, they gather wood, straw, reeds, and any other useful materials to construct their bonfires. On the evening of November 24th, the various groups compete to see who can ignite the largest and most spectacular fire, enlivening the town with a display of enthusiasm and friendly local rivalry that involves entire families.
The most thrilling moment of the evening is the ritual leap over the flames. The young "organizers" of the bonfire jump over the fire while shouting "Viva Santa Caterina!": a gesture charged with symbolic meaning, as performing the jump is a way of emulating the saint. Just as the flames did not burn the Alexandrian martyr, they will not burn the youths. Around the fires, residents gather with lit torches, praising the patron saint and repeating the ancient cry, "Viva li vampi di Santa Caterina!".
The tradition has its roots in the peasant civilization of the past. According to the elders, discarded agricultural tools were once placed at the center of the bonfires, and while the prayer of Saint Catherine of Alexandria was recited, livestock were led through the flames to purify them from disease and protect them from epidemics. Over the years, the number of fires has decreased, and for safety reasons, they are now primarily lit in the outskirts of the town, away from residential areas.
Today, the Vampe di Santa Caterina represent a core identity event that precedes the liturgical feast of November 25th, distinguishing itself from the town's major summer patronal celebrations. Between fire, devotion, and rural memory, the ritual tells the story of an inland Sicilian village faithful to its roots. For those visiting the Province of Caltanissetta in late November, the Vampe offer an ideal opportunity to discover one of the most authentic fire traditions in the Nissena region.
The 2026 Vampe di Santa Caterina will be renewed, according to tradition, on the evening of Tuesday, November 24th, 2026, in Santa Caterina Villarmosa, in the province of Caltanissetta. As every year, local youths divided by neighborhood will light the great bonfires in honor of the patron saint, Catherine of Alexandria, after weeks spent gathering wood, straw, and reeds. The evening will be animated by the challenge between districts to see who can light the largest fire and by the traditional leap over the flames. Being a spontaneous folk ritual, there is no official program with set times; the fires are generally lit after sunset in the various neighborhoods of the town.
Santa Caterina Villarmosa is located in the province of Caltanissetta, in central Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the SS 122 and SS 117 bis roads, just a few kilometers from the provincial capital, Caltanissetta. The nearest train station is in Caltanissetta, from which you can continue by bus.
The Vampe di Santa Caterina are lit on the evening of November 24th, the eve of the feast of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.
The bonfires are lit in the various neighborhoods and districts of the town, nowadays primarily in the outskirts for safety reasons.
This is a free, open-access street folk ritual.
We recommend maintaining a safe distance from the bonfires and following local community channels to learn which neighborhoods are participating and the expected ignition times.
