The popular September 8th feast blending faith, processions, and barefoot pilgrimages

The Madonna della Catena Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious and popular events in Villarosa, a town in the province of Enna, in central Sicily. The celebration takes place every year on September 8th, a date tied to Marian devotion, and revolves around the small Madonna della Catena countryside church, located about a kilometer from the town center, on the left side of the Strada Statale 121 towards the station.
According to local tradition, the small church stands where a customs chain once marked the border between the territory of Enna and the estates of Duke Notarbartolo: hence the name and the cult of the Madonna della Catena. The building, erected in the 18th century, houses two statues of the Virgin and is a destination for a pilgrimage that has been renewed for generations. In the week leading up to the festival, the countryside church is opened, and mass is celebrated every evening, accompanied by the participation of numerous faithful.
The most evocative part of the festival is the 'viaggiu scauzi', the barefoot journey that many devotees undertake to fulfill a vow or out of pure devotion. At dawn on September 8th, the faithful from the nearby hamlet of Villapriolo reach the sanctuary barefoot to attend the first mass, in a gesture of faith that crosses the countryside of inland Sicily. After the 10:00 AM mass, one of the two statues is carried in procession from the countryside church to the Immacolata Concezione Parish Church in the town center; in the afternoon, the statue traverses the main streets of Villarosa again to return to the countryside chapel, welcomed by the sound of firecrackers and the music of the band.
Around the countryside church, the festival becomes a banquet: among stalls and aromas, there is no shortage of roasted sausages, pizzas, and specialties of popular Sicilian cuisine, shared by entire families. The day closes with an evening show in the square, animated by cabaret, live music, and artists from the Sicilian scene, in an atmosphere that blends the religious dimension with the more joyful side of a village festival.
The Madonna della Catena Festival represents a precious piece of the intangible heritage of Villarosa and Sicily: a festival that preserves ancient gestures, peasant devotion, and community identity, and which every year attracts residents, returning emigrants, and visitors curious to experience an authentic moment of popular Sicilian religiosity.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna della Catena Festival in Villarosa (Enna province) will follow, according to tradition, the usual date of September 8th. At the moment, the detailed program, the times of the celebrations, and any evening show have not yet been published. The usual schedule of evening masses in the preceding week, the procession of the statue, and the barefoot pilgrimage ('viaggiu scauzi') of the devotees from Villarosa and Villapriolo is expected. Information will be updated as soon as the Immacolata Concezione Parish and the Municipality release the official calendar.
The festival is traditionally celebrated on September 8th, with evening masses in the week leading up to it and an evening show in Piazza Madonna della Catena.
