The patronal feast of Marianopoli, featuring a procession, relics, and the 'Cena Bianca manchese'
The Patronal Feast of Saint Prospero the Martyr is the most anticipated event of the year in Marianopoli, a small town of about two thousand inhabitants perched at 720 meters above sea level in the heart of the Caltanissetta province, Sicily. Every year, on the first Sunday of August, the entire community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together faith, folk tradition, and summer conviviality.
Saint Prospero, a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and was martyred under Emperor Diocletian, has been venerated in Marianopoli since the town's founding in the 18th century. His relics, whose authenticity is attested by a 1671 papal bull, are kept in an urn preserved in the Mother Church, a building dedicated to the Saint and to Mary Most Holy of Sorrows. For the people of Marianopoli, also known as manchisi, Saint Prospero is not just the protector of the village but an identity reference that binds generations together.
Celebrations begin days earlier with the preparatory novena. On the day of the feast, early in the morning, drummers roam the streets of the town for the traditional collection of offerings. In the evening, after the Solemn Mass in the Mother Church, the statue of Saint Prospero and the urn of relics emerge from the church amidst the festive sound of bells and the notes of the brass band.
Religious celebrations are complemented by a rich program of summer events, with shows and entertainment in the square. The most characteristic moment is the Cena Bianca manchese: a large DIY banquet set up along Via Roma, which everyone can join, sitting at the same table, strictly dressed in white. Between dances, games, and moments of conviviality, the evening closes with the awarding of the most beautiful table and prizes for the most elegant participants.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover Marianopoli and its territory, rich in archaeological evidence kept in the Sikania Culture Palace Museum and an ethnographic museum of peasant civilization. Immersed in the Nisseno hinterland, the town offers the visitor an authentic experience of the deepest Sicily, far from mass tourism circuits.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Saint Prospero the Martyr in Marianopoli is confirmed for Sunday, August 2, the first Sunday of the month. The most heartfelt event of the year for the local community is renewed with the traditional religious program: the preparatory novena, the morning collection by the drummers, the Solemn Mass in the Mother Church, and the evening procession of the patron's statue and relics along Via Roma, accompanied by the pageant of the Saints and the brass band.
The detailed program of side events and the summer schedule, including the Cena Bianca manchese, will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Marianopoli is located in the hinterland of the province of Caltanissetta. By car, it can be reached via the SS640 (Caltanissetta-Agrigento) and the provincial roads of the Nisseno area. The most convenient train station is Caltanissetta, from where you can continue by bus or car.
The patronal feast takes place on the first Sunday of August, preceded by the novena. Religious events are free to attend.
Accommodation in the village is limited: it is advisable to look for lodging in neighboring towns or in Caltanissetta. For the Cena Bianca manchese, remember to wear white clothing.
