High-altitude brunch at Schwemmalm, in the Ultental Valley
The Ultner Bergbrunch is a culinary event that brings locals and tourists to high altitudes every summer, specifically to the Schwemmalm, the hiking and skiing area of the Ultental Valley (Val d'Ultimo), in the municipality of Ultimo (Ulten), in the province of Bolzano, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The event takes place at the Erlebnisteich, an educational pond nestled in the alpine landscape at approximately 2,162 meters above sea level, accessible via the cable car that departs from Kuppelwies (1,150 m).
The Bergbrunch is a cross between a hearty breakfast and a light lunch, served in an informal and convivial atmosphere in the heart of the mountains. No reservations are required: you pay directly on-site and settle in to enjoy the genuine flavors of the valley.
The event is accompanied by musical entertainment, which helps create the festive atmosphere typical of South Tyrolean alpine huts.
The Bergbrunch is considered one of the most appreciated food and wine events in the Ultental Valley. The setting of the Erlebnisteich pond, with its attractions for children and the panoramic view of the Ortler-Cevedale peaks, makes the day perfect for families, hikers, and friends looking for a tasty break at high altitude. Those who prefer not to walk can comfortably take the cable car, while trekking enthusiasts can reach the Schwemmalm via the numerous trails in the area.
The Ultental Valley is one of the most authentic valleys in South Tyrol (Alto Adige), known for its centuries-old farmsteads, the thousand-year-old larches of Santa Gertrude, and a still-vibrant farming tradition. The Ultner Bergbrunch perfectly reflects this identity: zero-mile products, mountain hospitality, and a deep connection to the territory of the province of Bolzano.
The 2026 Ultner Bergbrunch will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2026, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, on the Schwemmalm at the Erlebnisteich pond. The menu confirms the tradition: alpine butter, fresh cheese, organic bread from the Ultental Valley, jams and herbal teas from local farmers, as well as fresh eggs, white sausages, and coffee. The event is accompanied by live music. No reservation is necessary; payment is made on-site. The Schwemmalm is accessible by cable car from Kuppelwies.
The Schwemmalm can be reached by car to Kuppelwies (a hamlet of San Nicolò/St. Nikolaus, Ultental Valley) and then by cable car up to 2,162 m. From Merano/Meran, follow the road to the Ultental Valley (approx. 30-40 minutes).
The event takes place in the morning, roughly from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
Adults: €25 (without cable car) / €35 (with round-trip cable car). Children up to 14 years: €10 (without cable car) / €15 (with cable car). No reservation required, payment on-site.
