About Ultner Bauernmarktl

The Ultner Bauernmarktl is the traditional farmers' market of the Ultental Valley, bringing the center of St. Walburg (Santa Valburga), the main village of the Ultimo municipality in the autonomous province of Bolzano, to life. Every other Saturday morning from July to mid-October, mountain farms from the Ulten and Deutschnonsberg areas showcase their authentic products: rye bread, Schüttelbrot, alpine cheeses, speck, jams, and aromatic herbs. An authentic event that celebrates the farming culture of this alpine valley.

A market that smells of the mountains

The Ultner Bauernmarktl is the farmers' market held in St. Walburg (Santa Valburga), the main village of the Ultimo municipality, nestled at an altitude of approximately 1,190 meters in the picturesque Ultental Valley, in the autonomous province of Bolzano, within the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Every other Saturday morning, from July to mid-October, the town center transforms into a lively meeting place where local farmers present the fruits of their labor.

Products from the Ulten and Deutschnonsberg farms

What makes this market special is its authenticity: the stalls are managed directly by the farming families from the mountain farms of the Ultental and the nearby Deutschnonsberg. Visitors can purchase specialties rooted in Tyrolean tradition and mountain agriculture:

  • rye bread and the typical Schüttelbrot, a crispy flatbread flavored with caraway, coriander, and fennel;
  • alpine cheeses and dairy products from mountain pastures;
  • speck and cured meats from the farms;
  • jams, syrups, and organically grown aromatic herbs;
  • honey, spirits, and other artisanal products from the valley.

An immersion in farming culture

Beyond the sale of products, the Ultner Bauernmarktl offers a genuine glimpse into daily life on the farms and the traditions of the Ultental Valley, one of the most pristine valleys in South Tyrol. The event is organized by the Zuanochten working group (Ultental-Deutschnonsberg) and is an ideal opportunity for both residents and tourists to get to know the agricultural and gastronomic heritage of the area.

The evening sibling: the Zuanochten

The same organizing group is also responsible for Zuanochten, a "slightly different" farmers' market held on select summer evenings: an evening format featuring quality farm products, traditional dishes, and a relaxed musical atmosphere. Together, these two events showcase the farming identity of this part of the South Tyrolean mountains.
