The Cabbage Weeks in Laas

The Laaser Krautwochen (the "Cabbage Weeks" of Laas) are an autumn event held in the municipality of Laas, in the Vinschgau Valley, in the autonomous province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol. For about two weeks, between the second half of October and the beginning of November, the village celebrates its signature product alongside its famous white marble and apricots: cabbage and sauerkraut (Sauerkraut).

A Vinschgau farming tradition

Laas is internationally renowned for its precious marble, but connoisseurs also know it for its sauerkraut: it is home to one of the largest sauerkraut producers in South Tyrol, processed according to a traditional recipe using cabbage grown exclusively in the fields of Laas and its surroundings. Sauerkraut has always been a precious winter staple and an essential accompaniment to autumn dishes, particularly during the Törggelen season, the typical South Tyrolean farmhouse snack.

What to expect

• October market in the Market Square, featuring local products, cabbage and sauerkraut dishes, and atmospheric music
• Cabbage specialties offered by the village's restaurants and eateries throughout the period
• Fun cabbage figures (the so-called Krautmander) displayed in shop windows
• Törggelen events in local farmhouses and taverns, with chestnuts, grape must, and seasonal specialties
• Guided tasting tours, vegetable fermentation workshops, and the harvest festival (Erntedankfest) with a brass band and a harvest float

A local event

Organized by the Laas merchants (Kaufleute Laas) in collaboration with the Schlanders-Laas Tourist Board, the Krautwochen is a widespread, free-entry event designed to highlight the gastronomic identity of the village and the Vinschgau Valley. It is not a massive festival, but an authentic opportunity to discover the South Tyrolean autumn through a simple, healthy product deeply linked to local peasant culture.
