The cabbage and sauerkraut weeks in Laas, Vinschgau Valley
The Laaser Krautwochen (the "Cabbage Weeks" of Laas) are an autumn event held in the municipality of Laas, in the Vinschgau Valley, in the autonomous province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol. For about two weeks, between the second half of October and the beginning of November, the village celebrates its signature product alongside its famous white marble and apricots: cabbage and sauerkraut (Sauerkraut).
Laas is internationally renowned for its precious marble, but connoisseurs also know it for its sauerkraut: it is home to one of the largest sauerkraut producers in South Tyrol, processed according to a traditional recipe using cabbage grown exclusively in the fields of Laas and its surroundings. Sauerkraut has always been a precious winter staple and an essential accompaniment to autumn dishes, particularly during the Törggelen season, the typical South Tyrolean farmhouse snack.
Organized by the Laas merchants (Kaufleute Laas) in collaboration with the Schlanders-Laas Tourist Board, the Krautwochen is a widespread, free-entry event designed to highlight the gastronomic identity of the village and the Vinschgau Valley. It is not a massive festival, but an authentic opportunity to discover the South Tyrolean autumn through a simple, healthy product deeply linked to local peasant culture.
From October 17 to November 1, 2026, Laas celebrates its cabbage weeks with a rich calendar of events throughout the village.
Throughout the period, Laas restaurants and eateries offer cabbage and sauerkraut specialties.
Laas is located in the Vinschgau Valley, along the SS38 state road between Merano and Malles. By train, the Laas station is served by the Merano-Malles line (Vinschgerbahn). By car, it can be reached from Merano by traveling up the valley towards the Reschen Pass.
The Krautwochen take place every year between October and early November. The highlight is the October market in the Market Square. Törggelen events generally require reservations.
