Celebrating UNESCO vineyard landscapes at the Castle of Grinzane Cavour
In the heart of the Langhe, the Castle of Grinzane Cavour hosts every spring the Tribute "Langhe-Roero and Monferrato: Waves of Beauty and Cultivated Geometries in the Landscapes and Wine Villages", an event celebrating the vineyard landscapes of Piedmont, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2014. The event takes place in Grinzane Cavour, a small town in the Province of Cuneo dominated by the manor that was once the home of Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour, and which today houses the Enoteca Regionale Piemontese.
The initiative was created to highlight the work and the people who, with dedication and expertise, contribute to generating the extraordinary viticultural beauty recognized as a treasure of humanity. It does not award individual vineyards, but rather entire hillsides: the awards are managed by the local wine protection consortia, which identify the most representative areas each year. Alongside the hillsides, the Mayors of the involved municipalities are also recognized as the institutional guardians of this landscape.
The convivial heart of the Tribute consists of tasting stands featuring producers participating in the "Short Supply Chain at the UNESCO Castle" project, with tastings paired with the great wines of the hills: from Barolo to Barbaresco, from Roero to Moscato d'Asti, from Barbera d'Asti to Alta Langa, and even Gavi and Timorasso. It is an opportunity to discover the oenological excellence of Piedmont up close, directly within the halls and courtyards of the castle.
Each edition also awards a special mention to a foreign worker employed in the vineyards, chosen as an example of successful integration and ethical sense of duty: a gesture that reminds us how the care of these landscapes is the result of many different hands. The Tribute is organized by the Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour in collaboration with the Protection Consortia, the Association for the Heritage of the Vineyard Landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, the Piedmont Region, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo, and Banca d'Alba.
