The Pro Loco polenta festival in the heart of the Asti Monferrato
The Traditional Polentone of Calosso is one of the most cherished events in the spring calendar of Calosso, a small village perched on the rolling hills of the Asti Monferrato, in the province of Asti, in the heart of Piedmont. The event takes place at the Salone Don Monticone in Piazza Sant'Alessandro and is organized with passion by the Pro Loco of Calosso, which mobilizes its volunteers every year to offer the community a day of celebration centered around a simple, iconic dish: polenta.
The heart of the festival is the free distribution of polenta, which begins at noon. The steaming, hearty polenta is served with traditional Piedmontese accompaniments:
The meal ends on a sweet note with classic fried bugie prepared by the Pro Loco, the typical fried dough pastries of the Piedmontese carnival and spring tradition.
Although admission and the meal are free, guests are invited to leave a charitable donation during the festival. All contributions are used to support local organizations and associations in Calosso. This is the true spirit of the Polentone: a moment of gathering where the village comes together around the table while supporting those who work for the local area.
Visiting Calosso for the Polentone is also the perfect opportunity to discover a charming village dominated by an imposing medieval castle and nestled within the vineyards of the Monferrato, home to Moscato d'Asti and Barbera. The village is also famous for the Fiera del Rapulè, which celebrates the autumn harvest and opens the characteristic crutin—small cellars carved into the tuff rock—to the public. The Polentone represents the spring face of this vibrant community life, authentically linked to the gastronomic traditions of the Asti region.
The Traditional Polentone is held at the Salone Don Monticone, in Piazza Sant'Alessandro in Calosso (AT), with polenta served starting at noon.
By car: Calosso can be reached via the A33 motorway (Asti exit) or the A21, continuing along the hilly roads toward Canelli and the Monferrato. By train: the nearest station is Canelli, on the Asti-Acqui Terme line, just a few kilometers from the village.
Polenta and its accompaniments are offered free of charge to everyone. During the distribution, guests may leave a voluntary donation to support local Calosso associations.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Calosso. For updates on dates and details, we recommend checking the Pro Loco's social media channels.
