The white truffle and the historic San Martin Fair in the heart of Canelli
The National White Truffle Fair and San Martin Fair is one of the most cherished autumn events in Canelli, the city of sparkling wine overlooking a bend in the Belbo River, in the Alto Monferrato area of the province of Asti, in Piedmont. The event brings together two souls in a single weekend: the fair dedicated to the white truffle (Tuber Magnatum Pico), a world-renowned excellence, and the historic San Martin Fair, an ancient village market fair featuring over a hundred stalls of all kinds.
The heart of the culinary experience is the Pala-Tartufo, a heated marquee set up on Corso Libertà, which hosts the White Truffle Exhibition and Competition, featuring the awarding of the best specimens and the most beautiful displays. Surrounding it, stalls offer tastings and local specialties: from veal tartare to plin ravioli with fondue, and eggs with black truffle, all paired with the great wines of the area, from Asti Spumante to Moscato.
Along Corso Libertà and in the squares of the historic center, the stalls of the San Martin Fair wind their way, while the funfair brings life to the areas dedicated to families. Every year, the program offers nature walks with simulated truffle hunting, sensory analysis sessions, guided tours to discover the underground Canelli and its famous Wine Cathedrals, as well as numerous activities designed for children.
Organized by the Municipality of Canelli together with the Pro Loco, the Regional Enoteca, the Consortium for the Protection of Asti, and many local associations, the fair has achieved National status in recent years, consolidating its appeal far beyond the borders of Monferrato. It is the perfect opportunity to discover one of Italy's wine capitals on one of its most vibrant days.
