Sicily's youngest carnival, featuring allegorical floats and traditional masks
The Trabia Carnival is one of the most beloved events in the festive tradition of the town of Trabia, located on the Tyrrhenian coast in the Province of Palermo. Born in 2008 thanks to the initiative of local youth, dance schools, and the municipal administration, it has grown rapidly to earn the affectionate nickname of "Sicily's youngest carnival." Today, it attracts thousands of visitors every year from Trabia and neighboring towns, transforming the village into a widespread celebration of color, music, and joy.
The heart and identity of the event are the historic Trabia masks: Panza and Prisenza, the iconic Carnival couple, along with Ninu Fetu (the fisherman) and Filomena. These popular characters, deeply rooted in the community's collective memory, were recognized in 2023 as historic cultural heritage with the establishment of the "Le Maschere di Trabia" association. The masks officially open the festivities by symbolically receiving the keys to the city.
The most anticipated moment is the parade of allegorical floats, the result of artisanal work by local groups and associations, accompanied by walking groups, jugglers, stilt walkers, dancers, and street performers. The parades wind along Corso La Masa, the main artery of Trabia, and also reach the picturesque seaside district of San Nicola l'Arena, starting from the tourist harbor. The festival is enriched by free tastings of typical Carnival sweets and dishes, such as chiacchiere and maccarruna cu sucu.
More than just a parade, the Trabia Carnival is a living expression of Sicilian folk traditions: it involves families, schools, associations, and merchants in a participatory event that combines fun, identity, and a sense of belonging. Included in the event calendar of the Metropolitan City of Palermo, it represents a great opportunity to discover Trabia and its coast even outside the summer season.
The 2026 Trabia Carnival was held from February 11 to 17 with the theme "In Love," chosen in harmony with Valentine's Day. The week of festivities began on Wednesday, February 11, with a presentation conference at the municipal library, followed on Thursday, February 12, by the official opening in Piazza Lanza and the symbolic handover of the city keys to the masks. On Saturday, February 14, the Joyful Dance performance took place, while on Sunday, February 15, the "Maschere in auto" initiative between Trabia and San Nicola l'Arena preceded the first grand float parade along Corso La Masa, with free tastings of chiacchiere. On Monday, February 16, the parades moved to San Nicola l'Arena, starting from the tourist harbor, and the grand finale on Tuesday, February 17, brought the floats back to Corso La Masa, closing the festival with a tasting of maccarruna cu sucu.
Trabia is located along the Tyrrhenian coast, about 35 km from Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, taking the Trabia exit. By train, the Trabia station is served by the Palermo-Messina line. The district of San Nicola l'Arena is just a few minutes from the town center.
Access to the parades and events is free. The main float parades take place along Corso La Masa in the center of Trabia and in San Nicola l'Arena. We recommend checking the official Trabia Carnival Facebook page for updated schedules and program details.
