The Nativity re-enacted in the iconic landmarks of Santa Flavia

The Santa Flavia Living Nativity is one of the most cherished Christmas traditions in the town of Santa Flavia, within the Metropolitan City of Palermo. Throughout the Advent and holiday season, the village comes alive with a re-enactment of the Nativity: dozens of costumed performers bring to life a journey that weaves together faith, memory, and folk tradition, offering visitors a glimpse of Bethlehem as it might have looked two thousand years ago, right in the heart of Sicily.
The event is set against one of the most picturesque backdrops in the region. Previous editions have taken place within the grounds of Villa Filangeri, the 17th-century noble residence of the Filangeri family—now home to the Town Hall—with its expansive Mediterranean park, as well as in public areas such as the railway station garden. The re-enactment winds through huts, flickering fires, scenes of daily life, and workshops of ancient crafts, culminating in the Holy Family, the shepherds, and the arrival of the Three Wise Men with their gifts.
The nativity scene is the result of a collective effort by many local residents. It is organized by the La Città che vorrei association, with the support of the Metropolitan City of Palermo and the local municipal administration. The direction and coordination are handled by Katia Balistreri and Adelaide Maggiore, while the costumes were created through the voluntary contributions of local seamstresses and costume designers. Dozens of performers, both adults and children, lend their faces to the scenes, fostering a spirit of deep participation and celebrating the community's Christian and folk roots.
Overlooking the sea with its seaside hamlets of Porticello, Aspra, and Sant'Elia, Santa Flavia preserves a strong identity tied to Christian tradition and popular culture. The Living Nativity is one of the most vibrant expressions of this bond: a free, family-friendly event that unites neighborhoods, engages new generations, and guides residents and visitors through the festive season, amidst the ancient stones of the village and the warmth of the community.
The 2026 edition of the Santa Flavia Living Nativity has not yet been officially scheduled. Based on previous editions, a new re-enactment of the Nativity is expected during the Christmas season, organized by the La Città che vorrei association with the support of the Municipality and the Metropolitan City of Palermo. Dates, times, and the detailed program will be announced by the organizers closer to the holidays.
