Mugello-style tortelli and prugnolo mushrooms in Scarperia, the heart of the Mugello region
The Tortello and Prugnolo Mushroom Festival is one of the most anticipated gastronomic events of the spring in Scarperia, a village in the municipality of Scarperia e San Piero, in the heart of the Mugello region, near Florence (Tuscany). Organized by the Circolo MCL of Scarperia, the event showcases two iconic products of local cuisine: the famous Mugello potato tortello and the prugnolo, a highly sought-after spring mushroom.
The Mugello potato tortello is a traditional peasant dish: handmade fresh pasta filled with boiled potatoes, seasoned with garlic, parsley, and cheese, and typically served with a meat ragรน. It is a hearty dish, originally created to warm the tables of families in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
The prugnolo (Calocybe gambosa) is a prized spring mushroom that sprouts in the meadows and woods of the Mugello between April and May. Fragrant and delicate, it is the star of sauces and side dishes that highlight the season's flavors. The combination of these two ingredients makes the festival a unique opportunity to savor the Mugello spring.
The event is held in the heated rooms of the Circolo MCL, at Via San Martino 16, and takes place over two weekends in May. The service includes:
The atmosphere is that of a typical Tuscan village festival: convivial tables, traditional dishes prepared by the Circolo's volunteers, and a warm, family-like welcome that makes both locals and visitors feel right at home.
Scarperia is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, renowned for its ancient cutlery tradition and the striking Palazzo dei Vicari. Visiting the festival is also the perfect excuse to explore this charming medieval village and the Mugello territory, with its rolling hills, abbeys, and the Mugello Circuit. A day that perfectly blends fine dining, tradition, and the Tuscan landscape.
