The flavors of Mugello in Scarperia, featuring meat-sauce tortelli and crispy ficattole
The Tortello and Ficattola Festival is one of the most cherished culinary events in Scarperia and San Piero, a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Florence nestled in the hills of the Mugello, Tuscany. For three consecutive weekends between late March and early April, the community gathers around good food to celebrate the most authentic flavors of this corner of the Tuscan Apennines, where peasant cuisine is still a matter of family and memory.
The signature dish of the festival is the Mugello tortello, fresh pasta filled with potatoes and topped with a savory meat sauce: a humble yet rich specialty that originated in the homes of Mugello farmers and has become a true local gastronomic institution over time. Alongside the tortelli, the ficattole take center stageโleavened dough sheets that are fried and served piping hot, to be enjoyed plain or stuffed with prosciutto crudo and stracchino cheese: a delicious combination that is worth the visit alone.
The food stand offers genuine and hearty cuisine. Must-try dishes include:
On Easter Sunday, a special offer is available: a fixed-price Easter menu by reservation, dedicated to those who want to celebrate in good company with festive dishes.
The event takes place at the Le Cortine Sports Field, at Via Giacomo Matteotti 52 in Scarperia. A great advantage of the festival is that the venue is covered and heated: the celebration is guaranteed even in case of rain, a precious condition in a fickle season like the Mugello spring. The stand is open for both lunch and dinner on Saturdays and Sundays.
The event is organized by local sports associations ASD Fortis and ASD San Lorenzo, which enliven village life throughout the year. The festival is much more than a culinary appointment: it is an opportunity for the community of Scarperia and San Piero to meet, a moment when different generations gather around tables to share the flavors of Mugello. For those visiting this village, also famous for its knife-making tradition and the beautiful Palazzo dei Vicari, the festival is the best way to discover the genuine soul of this Tuscan land.
The 2026 Tortello and Ficattola Festival was held in Scarperia and San Piero (Mugello, FI) over three weekends: March 21-22, March 28-29, and April 4-5, at the Le Cortine Sports Field on Via Giacomo Matteotti 52.
The food stand, open for lunch and dinner, offered Mugello tortelli with meat sauce, ficattole (plain or with prosciutto crudo and stracchino), grilled meats, as well as desserts and local wine. On Easter Sunday, April 5, a special fixed-price menu was served by reservation for 33 euros, including ficattole with prosciutto and stracchino, tortelli with meat sauce, grilled meat, dessert, water, and wine. The event, organized by ASD Fortis and ASD San Lorenzo, took place regularly in covered and heated facilities.
Scarperia and San Piero can be reached by car from the Autostrada del Sole (A1), taking the Barberino di Mugello exit, or via the SS503 Passo del Giogo road. The journey from Florence takes about 40 minutes. The festival venue is the Le Cortine Sports Field, at Via Giacomo Matteotti 52.
The food stand is open for lunch and dinner on the Saturdays and Sundays of the three weekends.
ร la carte dining at the stand. Reservations are required for the fixed-price Easter menu on Easter Sunday. Information and reservations: tel. +39 333 5438336.
The venue is covered and heated, so the festival takes place regularly even in case of rain. We recommend booking in advance for the busiest days.
