The ancient votive banquet of Malfa, on the island of Salina

The Tavuliata di San Giuseppe is one of the most ancient and defining traditions of the municipality of Malfa, on the island of Salina, in the Aeolian archipelago (province of Messina, Sicily). Every year on March 19th, the day dedicated to Saint Joseph, the village gathers around a long table set up in the square in front of the church of San Lorenzo: a votive, religious, and popular ritual that has been repeated without interruption since the first half of the 19th century.
The tradition dates back to 1835. Popular legend tells that some inhabitants of Malfa, caught in a violent storm while at sea, prayed to Saint Joseph, promising to donate what they had on board to the poor if they returned safely. Once they reached the island unharmed, they fulfilled their vow, giving life to this form of devotion and thanksgiving, passed down from generation to generation to this day.
The day begins with mass in the church of the Immaculate Conception in the town center. From there, the procession of the Holy Family sets off: a man, a young woman, and a child portray Saint Joseph, the Madonna, and the Baby Jesus, dressed in costumes reminiscent of Eastern tradition, followed by the inhabitants carrying the numerous dishes in a parade. The procession is accompanied by the music of local players, with guitar, accordion, and mandolin.
At the center of the festival is the tavuliata: a very long table covered with white tablecloths and adorned with flowers, upon which the dishes prepared since dawn by volunteers and families are gathered. Traditional specialties include ยซquadareยป (large pots) of pasta and chickpeas seasoned with wild fennel, freshly caught and grilled fish, local wine, and typical Aeolian sweets, including almond pastries. Everything is then distributed and shared among those present, both residents and visitors who have arrived from the other islands and from Sicily.
More than just a gastronomic event, the Tavuliata is a collective gesture of hospitality and solidarity: the food is not sold but donated, in the spirit of the original vow. It is a precious opportunity to discover the most authentic soul of Salina and the Aeolian Islands, far from summer tourism, immersed in the flavors, songs, and popular religiosity of this small island community.
The dates and details for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the festival is traditionally held on March 19th.
