Honoring the ancient tuna fishing heritage in the seaside village of San Giorgio
The San Giorgio Tonnara Festival takes place in the eponymous seaside village, a district of the municipality of Gioiosa Marea in the province of Messina, along the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily at the foot of the Nebrodi mountains. Every year in late June, the small community gathers to commemorate one of the region's oldest traditions: the tuna fishing practiced for centuries in the gulf's waters, an activity that long served as the town's primary economic and cultural pillar.
The roots of the San Giorgio tonnara reach back to the Middle Ages, with the first records dating to around 1060, when the activity was linked to Benedictine monastic estates. A pivotal moment occurred on June 27, 1407, when the Orioles family secured perpetual fishing rights, a privilege that tied the village's destiny to the sea for generations. The tonnara remained active until the 1960s, gaining prestige among the coastal fishing enterprises. To preserve this legacy, the festival was born with the explicit goal of safeguarding and revaluing an ancient tradition tied to the island's millennial history.
The Tonnara Festival weaves together culture, memory, and flavor. The program alternates between educational moments and social gatherings, including:
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to visit San Giorgio and its panoramic view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, wandering through narrow alleys and coastal vistas while soaking in the authentic atmosphere of a community proud of its history. The event is organized by the Vivi San Giorgio Association, with the collaboration of the Pro Loco and the patronage of the Municipality of Gioiosa Marea, attracting visitors from across the Nebrodi region and the province of Messina.
The 12th edition of the San Giorgio Tonnara Festival will be held on June 27 and 28, 2026, in the district of San Giorgio, Gioiosa Marea. It opens on Friday, June 27 at 8:00 PM and continues on Saturday, June 28 from 6:30 PM.
The heart of the event is the 'Un Mare di Sapori' (A Sea of Flavors) festival, featuring fish food and tastings of Mediterranean tuna and fresh catch, alongside stalls of local products and crafts. The program includes conferences on the history of the tonnara, guided visits to fishing sites, and musical and entertainment shows in the evenings. The event is promoted by the Vivi San Giorgio Association with the Pro Loco and the patronage of the Municipality of Gioiosa Marea.
San Giorgio is a district of Gioiosa Marea (ME) on the Tyrrhenian coast. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Brolo-Gioiosa Marea exit and continuing along the SS113. By train, the reference station is Gioiosa Marea, on the Messina-Palermo Tyrrhenian line.
The festival takes place in late June, generally during the last weekend of the month, featuring evening events in the village of San Giorgio.
Admission to the events is free. We recommend arriving early on the main evenings and combining your visit with a walk along the seafront and the coastal districts of Gioiosa Marea.
