About Tonnara Festival

Every year in late June, the seaside village of San Giorgio—a district of Gioiosa Marea on the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina—celebrates the Tonnara Festival. This event honors a centuries-old tradition: the tuna fishing that defined the town's economy and identity for generations. Through conferences, historical equipment exhibits, Mediterranean tuna tastings, local craft stalls, and live music, the event organized by the Vivi San Giorgio association brings the history of the 'tonnara' (tuna fishery) back to life, dating back to the Middle Ages and the fishing rights granted to the Orioles family in 1407.

A festival that tells the story of the sea

The San Giorgio Tonnara Festival takes place in the eponymous seaside village, a district of the municipality of Gioiosa Marea in the province of Messina, along the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily at the foot of the Nebrodi mountains. Every year in late June, the small community gathers to commemorate one of the region's oldest traditions: the tuna fishing practiced for centuries in the gulf's waters, an activity that long served as the town's primary economic and cultural pillar.

A centuries-old tradition

The roots of the San Giorgio tonnara reach back to the Middle Ages, with the first records dating to around 1060, when the activity was linked to Benedictine monastic estates. A pivotal moment occurred on June 27, 1407, when the Orioles family secured perpetual fishing rights, a privilege that tied the village's destiny to the sea for generations. The tonnara remained active until the 1960s, gaining prestige among the coastal fishing enterprises. To preserve this legacy, the festival was born with the explicit goal of safeguarding and revaluing an ancient tradition tied to the island's millennial history.

What to expect at the festival

The Tonnara Festival weaves together culture, memory, and flavor. The program alternates between educational moments and social gatherings, including:

  • Conferences and meetings dedicated to the history of the tonnara and the bond between the village and the sea;
  • Exhibitions of tools and memorabilia from tuna fishing, showcasing the work of the 'tonnaroti';
  • Tastings of Mediterranean tuna and fresh catch, paired with local specialties;
  • Gastronomic and craft stalls featuring regional delicacies;
  • Musical performances and entertainment that bring the village heart to life during the evenings.

A village to discover

The festival is also the perfect opportunity to visit San Giorgio and its panoramic view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, wandering through narrow alleys and coastal vistas while soaking in the authentic atmosphere of a community proud of its history. The event is organized by the Vivi San Giorgio Association, with the collaboration of the Pro Loco and the patronage of the Municipality of Gioiosa Marea, attracting visitors from across the Nebrodi region and the province of Messina.
