Hand-harvesting wheat and ancient rural traditions in the Landro district
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Landro Wheat Harvest Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in Gioiosa Marea, a town in the Province of Messina overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and resting on the slopes of the Nebrodi mountains. Every year, in the countryside of the Landro district, the La Spiga Cultural Association, led by Roberta Fonti, faithfully reconstructs the wheat harvesting ritual as it was performed until the 1950s and 60s, when the harvest was the highlight of the agricultural year.
The heart of the day is the hand-harvesting of wheat: farmers, dressed in traditional attire, head into the fields equipped with scythes, leggings, and cane finger guards, gathering the stalks using ancient techniques passed down through generations. Visitors are invited to join in, trying their hand at using the scythe and binding the sheaves in an experience that blends memory with fun.
The festival is part of the "Wheat Paths" circuit, a journey that tells the story of every stage of wheat cultivation, from sowing and threshing to tasting the final product. Along the paths of the district, exhibitions of ancient agricultural tools related to the wheat cycle and rural life are set up, while educational and sensory workshops on ancient grains introduce adults and children alike to the culture of bread and the Mediterranean Diet.
The atmosphere is brought to life by traditional Sicilian folk music and songs, group dances, and folklore. Among the most anticipated events is the pastry competition among the local housewives, who challenge each other in preparing traditional sweets, followed by the grand maccheronata tasting that closes the festival. There is also a farmers' market featuring local products and specialties made from durum wheat processed using traditional methods.
Experiencing the Wheat Harvest Festival means discovering the rural soul of Gioiosa Marea and the small villages of the Nebrodi, in a landscape that weaves together cultivated hills, olive groves, and sea views. It is the perfect opportunity for visitors eager to discover the authentic traditions of inland Sicily, far from mass tourism circuits.
The 2026 edition of the Landro Wheat Harvest Festival does not yet have an official date communicated by the organizers. The event is traditionally held on a Sunday in July in the Landro district of Gioiosa Marea (ME) and, following previous editions, is expected to feature the hand-harvesting of wheat with period costumes, the "Wheat Paths" circuit, workshops on ancient grains, the pastry competition among local housewives, and the maccheronata tasting. The detailed program will be announced by the La Spiga Cultural Association in the weeks leading up to the event.
