The prickly pear festival in the heart of Capo d'Orlando

Prickly Pear Festival is the annual autumn celebration in Capo d'Orlando, on the Tyrrhenian coast of the Province of Messina, dedicated to one of the most iconic fruits of Sicilian agricultural tradition: the prickly pear. This sweet fruit of the opuntia cactus paints the island's countryside in shades of red and yellow between September and October. The event takes place in the heart of the town, in Piazza Matteotti, which is transformed for the occasion into a large, free-entry gastronomic village.
The highlight of the festival is the free distribution of prickly pears to visitors. Every year, hundreds of kilos of fruit are sourced from producers in San Cono, in the province of Cataniaโone of the most renowned areas for opuntia cultivation in Sicily. Alongside the fresh fruit, stalls offer typical local products and sweets, creating a tasting journey that showcases the flavors of the Nebrodi mountains and the Orlandina coast.
The festival day is brought to life by musical and folk performances, entertainment, and activities that draw families, tourists, and curious visitors to the center of Capo d'Orlando. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Capo d'Orlando in collaboration with the Municipality and the "Merendino" Hotel Management Institute, whose students contribute to the preparation and promotion of the products.
The Prickly Pear Festival takes place in October, coinciding with the celebrations in honor of Maria Santissima of Capo d'Orlando, the city's patron saint, celebrated on October 22nd. The festival thus fits into a period of high local interest, blending popular devotion with the promotion of local agricultural produce and helping to extend the tourist season on the Messina coast beyond the summer months.
Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and dominated by a promontory topped with its castle, Capo d'Orlando is one of the most popular destinations on the northern coast of Sicily. Events like the Prickly Pear Festival highlight the agricultural and gastronomic soul of this region, offering residents and visitors the chance to discover an ancient and versatile fruit in a convivial and free setting.
