The patronal feast of the village of the two towers, featuring a procession and the maccarunata

The San Rocco Festival is one of the most characteristic moments in the traditions of Piraino, a small municipality of just under four thousand inhabitants perched over 400 meters above sea level along the Saracen Coast, in the hilly hinterland of the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina. Known as the village of the two towers for its medieval citadel and the Saracen tower that dominate the town, Piraino provides a unique scenic backdrop for its patronal feast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Aeolian Islands.
The religious heart of the festival falls on August 16th, the day dedicated to Saint Roch. On this day, the statues of San Rocco, Santa Lucia, Sant'Antonio di Padova, and Maria SS. della Trinità are carried in a procession through the village streets. The parade begins at the Church of the Rosary, located in Piazza Rosario, and winds through the maze of alleys in the historic center, accompanied by the devotion of residents and visitors. During the festival, alongside religious rites such as masses and the procession, there are games in the squares, stalls selling local products, and traditional crafts.
The festivities conclude with the traditional maccarunata in Piazza della Libertà, a convivial moment where the Piraino community gathers around a shared plate of macaroni. The evening is framed by good music, live performances, and the characteristic fireworks launched from the Guardiola, the panoramic terrace overlooking the sea. For one night, the historic center becomes a large open-air temple, where devotees and tourists can appreciate the architectural and natural beauty of the medieval village.
The cult of Saint Roch, a protector invoked against epidemics, is widespread in Italy, and in Sicily, it finds one of its most vibrant expressions in Piraino, intertwining religious devotion with gastronomic conviviality and the town's identity. The festival is part of the municipality's summer calendar, which sees August animated by numerous events, and represents an opportunity to discover a Nebrodi village rich in churches, palaces, and glimpses of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The program for the 2026 edition of the San Rocco Festival in Piraino has not yet been published. The event is tied to the fixed date of August 16th, the patron saint's day, around which festivities are organized in the village's historic center. It is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Piraino and the parish for updates on dates and the program.
