Two days of devotion, local flavors, and entertainment in the Piana district

In the Piana district, a historic neighborhood that is part of the town of Brolo in the province of Messina, the Madonna Addolorata Festival stands as one of the oldest and most heartfelt religious and folk celebrations in the region. Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and nestled between the coast and the slopes of the Nebrodi mountains, Piana preserves a unique identity rooted in local families, devotion, and long-standing traditions.
The festival is deeply rooted in the popular spirituality of a neighborhood that chose the Virgin of Sorrows as its guide and protector. Over the years, the celebration has evolved from a pure expression of popular devotion into a major event, serving as a symbol of the district's social and economic revival.
The most anticipated moment remains the Sunday evening procession, an event of intense emotional and spiritual participation featuring the recently restored statue of the Madonna Addolorata, accompanied by a marching band and the faithful through the village streets. Holy Masses and firecracker displays mark the two days, in the typical Sicilian blend of the sacred and the profane.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich folk program: the maccheroni festival, food stalls serving the famous sausage, eggplant, and onion sandwich, artisanal pastries, and ancient street games that evoke the pastimes of yesteryear. Among these, the traditional "Gioco dei Pignateddi" stands out as a challenge that delights both young and old.
The festivities conclude with a pyromusical show, a spectacle of light, color, and music that enchants residents and visitors alike, marking the highlight of the event. It is a completely free celebration, designed for families and anyone wishing to rediscover the roots of a community that, in the words of parish priest Father Enzo Caruso, finds in the festival an opportunity to look ahead without forgetting its history.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Madonna Addolorata Festival in Piana di Brolo has not yet been published. The event usually takes place in August and follows a well-established structure: a gastronomic evening with stalls and music, and a day dedicated to the solemn procession of the Virgin, the maccheroni festival, street games, and the traditional final pyromusical show.
Official dates and the program will be announced by the Municipality of Brolo and the Piana community in the weeks leading up to the event. This page will be updated as soon as information becomes available.
