Faith, art, and tradition in the seaside district of Scafa, Capo d'Orlando

The Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival in Scafa is one of the most cherished events of the summer in the Scafa district, the historic seaside village of Capo d'Orlando, in the province of Messina, on the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily. For three days, usually during the last weekend of July, the small local community gathers in devotion to the Madonna delle Grazie, alternating moments of religious reflection with evenings of celebration, art, and conviviality that involve both residents and holidaymakers.
The religious heart of the festival is the procession of the statue of Maria SS. delle Grazie, which on Sunday winds through the streets of the district accompanied by the local Cittร di Capo d'Orlando Cultural Music Band. The devotional parade reaches the nearby village of San Gregorio in the late afternoon, in a journey that ideally links the seaside district with the hilly hinterland. The day begins with a solemn Eucharistic celebration and concludes in the evening with a fireworks display overlooking the sea.
Alongside the spiritual dimension, the festival offers a well-curated secular program. Recurring highlights include the art exhibition featuring oils and watercolors by local artists, evenings of musical entertainment and cabaret, and, above all, the free tasting of spaghetti with garlic, oil, and chili pepperโa simple, iconic dish that captures the popular, maritime soul of the district. The mass held in the evocative setting of the Capo d'Orlando Marina tourist port is one of the most scenic moments of the entire event.
Organized by the district community with the support of the parish and local volunteers, the festival is a prime example of how, in the small towns of the Messina province, patronal and local celebrations remain occasions for social cohesion and the rediscovery of roots. For those visiting Capo d'Orlando in summer, the Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival in Scafa is an authentic opportunity to experience the Sicily of traditions, far from the most crowded tourist circuits.
At the moment, the official program and dates for the 2026 edition of the Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival in Scafa have not been published.
