The Shrove Tuesday celebration in the heart of Val di Non
In the small village of Tavon, part of the Municipality of Predaia in Val di Non, Carnival is experienced as a true community celebration. The highlight is "Canederli in piazza," an event that brings Shrove Tuesday to life every year in Piazza di Tavon, the heart of the community. The event is organized by the Tavon Youth Group, which has long kept this convivial tradition alive in the Trentino-Alto Adige region.
The absolute stars of the day are the canederli, the typical bread dumplings of Trentino alpine cuisine, served steaming hot right in the square. They are accompanied by sauerkraut and scodegin, the traditional local pork rind and meat sausage of the rural tradition. Everything is served to participants in a festive atmosphere, with music accompanying the collective feast and warming the mood despite the February chill.
What makes the Tavon Carnival special is what happens after the meal in the square: the party moves to the open cellars of the village, which throw open their doors to locals and visitors alike. It is an authentic way to discover the hospitality of the people of Val di Non and to experience the village from the inside, following a ritual passed down through generations. An experience best enjoyed in the company of the locals to truly grasp its spirit.
Far from the large masked parades, the Tavon Carnival represents the most intimate and popular soul of Trentino's winter festivals: no sumptuous floats, but good mountain food, local cellar wine, music, and the desire to be together. Included in the rich calendar of Carnivals of Val di Non and Trentino-Alto Adige, "Canederli in piazza" is the perfect opportunity to savor the gastronomic tradition and conviviality of this corner of Trentino, just a stone's throw from the nature of the Predaia plateau.
On February 17, 2026, Shrove Tuesday, Tavon di Predaia renewed the appointment with "Canederli in piazza." In Piazza di Tavon, the village's Youth Group offered the usual distribution of steaming canederli, sauerkraut, and scodegin, accompanied by music. As per tradition, after the collective meal, the party moved to the open cellars of the village for a day of conviviality and typical Val di Non flavors.
Tavon is a village in the Municipality of Predaia, in Val di Non (province of Trento). By car, it can be reached from the SS43 Val di Non road, exiting towards Coredo/Predaia; the Predaia plateau is just a few minutes away. The nearest train station is served by the Trento-Malé-Mezzana Railway (Trentino Trasporti), from which you can continue by local valley buses.
The event takes place on Shrove Tuesday, marking the end of the Carnival.
The distribution of canederli, sauerkraut, and scodegin takes place in Piazza di Tavon; dress warmly for the mountain winter climate and continue the day in the village's open cellars.
