The grand strawberry celebration in South Tyrol's most famous high-altitude valley
In the heart of the Stelvio National Park, Val Martello (Martelltal) is South Tyrol's strawberry valley par excellence. It is home to the highest contiguous strawberry cultivation area in Europe: the fruits ripen between 900 and 1,800 meters above sea level, where warm days and cool nights slow down the ripening process, giving the strawberries an exceptionally intense aroma. The Municipality of Martello, in the Province of Bolzano, celebrates this agricultural tradition every year with the Südtiroler Erdbeerfest, the Strawberry Festival.
The heart of the event is the grand festival held on a Sunday in late June at the Freizeitzentrum Trattla, the valley's leisure park. The day kicks off with a traditional Frühschoppen accompanied by the Martello Music Band, followed by the ceremonial tapping of a beer keg by the Forst brewery, live entertainment, and games for children.
The festival is not limited to a single day. The Erdbeertage (Strawberry Days) span about two weeks, turning the entire Val Martello into a culinary journey: guided hikes along the Südtiroler Erdbeerweg (Strawberry Trail), e-bike tours, jam-making workshops, visits to the Laimburg Research Centre's experimental fields, and special strawberry-themed menus in participating local restaurants.
Organized by the Bürgergenossenschaft Martell 3B, the citizens' cooperative of Martello, the festival is a genuine opportunity to discover one of South Tyrol's agricultural gems in a spectacular alpine setting, at the foot of the Ortler-Cevedale peaks.
The 2026 Strawberry Festival in Val Martello centers on the main day of Sunday, June 28, while the Erdbeertage bring the entire valley to life from June 27 to July 12 with hikes, workshops, and themed menus.
The festival at the Freizeitzentrum Trattla is the showcase for Martello's high-altitude strawberries, in the Province of Bolzano, featuring a market of local products, family entertainment, and the highlights of the Strawberry Queen coronation and the giant cake cutting.
Stalls with regional specialties and handmade artisanal products.
Val Martello can be reached by car from Val Venosta: take the exit at Coldrano/Laces along the Val Venosta state road (SS38), then drive up the valley to the Freizeitzentrum Trattla. By train, reach Laces station on the Val Venosta line (Merano-Malles), then take a local bus or shuttle to Martello.
The main festival has free admission; registration is required for some guided hikes and Erdbeertage workshops. Information: Bürgergenossenschaft Martell 3B, tel. +39 380 748 6879, [email protected].
Bring layered clothing: temperatures drop at high altitudes even in summer. An excellent destination for a family trip, perfect to combine with a walk in the Stelvio National Park.
