The historic South Tyrolean bread market in Piazza Duomo, Bressanone
Every year, on the first weekend of October, the charming Piazza Duomo in Bressanone (Brixen) fills with the warm, inviting aroma of freshly baked bread. The Südtiroler Brot- und Strudelmarkt, the South Tyrolean Bread and Strudel Market, is one of the most beloved food and wine events in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, drawing thousands of visitors to the heart of the Isarco Valley each year.
Bakers and pastry chefs from all the valleys of South Tyrol set up their stalls at the foot of the Cathedral, offering an extraordinary overview of the many local bread varieties: from rye bread to crunchy Schüttelbrot, from the rustic "Pusterer Breatl" to loaves seasoned with fennel and caraway seeds, not to mention autumn pastries and the quintessential apple strudel, the iconic dessert of South Tyrolean cuisine.
The cultural heart of the event is the "From Grain to Bread" (Vom Korn zum Brot) historical trail, which guides visitors through every stage of traditional production: from threshing and milling to baking in a wood-fired oven. It is a journey back in time that reveals how bread was made in the mountain valleys, enriched by live folk music and practical demonstrations.
Throughout the three days, the bread workshop is open, where you can knead and bake alongside master bakers. Free courses are available for children aged 6 to 14 and adults aged 15 and up, with no reservation required. The event also maintains its traditional and spiritual dimension: the final day begins with the solemn Thanksgiving Mass (Erntedankmesse) in the Bressanone Cathedral, featuring the ceremonial entrance of the bakers and the singing of the Cathedral choir.
The Bread and Strudel Market is much more than a simple food fair: it is a celebration of an ancient craft and a cultural identity deeply rooted in the South Tyrolean territory. Strolling among the stalls, tasting the specialties, and listening to traditional music in one of the most beautiful squares in the municipality of Bressanone is an authentic way to experience autumn in South Tyrol. Admission to the market is free.
From October 2nd to 4th, 2026, Piazza Duomo in Bressanone hosts the 24th edition of the Südtiroler Brot- und Strudelmarkt. The market opens on Friday morning at 10:00 AM with the official inauguration and the cutting of a large loaf and an apple strudel, accompanied by traditional music.
Over the three days, visitors can follow the "From Grain to Bread" historical trail, participate in free baking courses with a master baker (for children aged 6-14 and adults 15+), and purchase rye bread, Schüttelbrot, Puster Valley bread, and apple strudel. On Sunday at 10:00 AM, the Thanksgiving Mass is celebrated in the Bressanone Cathedral with the Cathedral choir.
Bressanone is easily accessible by train: the railway station is located on the Innsbruck-Verona line (stop for all regional trains and IC/EC trains) and is just a few minutes' walk from the historic center. The bus station is about a 10-minute walk from Piazza Duomo. By car, take the Bressanone exit on the A22 Brenner motorway.
The market is generally open from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM or 6:30 PM, with Sunday dedicated to the Thanksgiving Mass. Admission is free. Free baking workshops are available for children and adults.
