The traditional carnival of Rivara, in the heart of the Canavese region
In the heart of the Canavese region, in the Province of Turin, the small town of Rivara celebrates its Strassapapé Carnival every year, known in the local dialect as Al Carluvà d'j Strassapapè. The name is a direct nod to the locals: "Strassapapé" has been the nickname for the people of Rivara for generations, so much so that it even serves as the title for the town's official periodical. It is a deeply rooted celebration that blends folklore, rural tradition, and a strong sense of community.
The highlight is the afternoon parade that winds through the town's historic center: allegorical floats, masked groups, and clouds of confetti bring the streets of Rivara to life in a festive atmosphere that delights both young and old. With shows and performances, the Carnival is designed primarily for families, featuring plenty of entertainment dedicated to children.
The heart of the day is the grand food distribution organized by the Pro Loco: classic polenta with stew, tufeja (the traditional Canavese meat and bean stew cooked in a characteristic terracotta pot), and the essential apple fritters. It is a menu that tells the story of the simple, generous cuisine of Piedmont, best enjoyed in good company.
The Strassapapé Carnival is a voluntary donation event, organized with passion by the volunteers of the Rivara Pro Loco in collaboration with the local municipality. It stands as one of the many historic carnivals in the Canavese, a land that experiences an extraordinary season of popular festivals at this time of year—from polenta feasts to village parades—where a sense of community remains the true protagonist.
