About Bataja dle Reines

In Cantoira, nestled in the heart of the Lanzo Valleys, the Bataja dle Reines takes center stage. This is the grand finale of the Lanzo Valleys Queen Cow Competition, a traditional contest where Aosta Valley breed cows compete for the title of 'queen of the herd' by pushing against each other with their horns. It is a day of alpine celebration that blends livestock tradition, breeders' pride, and mountain gastronomy, culminating in the crowning of the winners across seven categories.

The Bataja dle Reines in Cantoira

In the village of Cantoira, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Turin tucked away in the Lanzo Valleys, one of the most cherished traditions of the Piedmontese Alps is celebrated every autumn: the Bataja dle Reines, or 'Battle of the Queens'. This is the grand finale of the Lanzo Valleys Queen Competition, the culmination of a long circuit of qualifying rounds held throughout the valley from March to October.

What is the Battle of the Queens?

The Reines are Aosta Valley breed cows, either black or chestnut-pied: robust animals with a spirited nature, perfectly adapted to the rugged mountain pastures. During the summer in the high pastures, the strongest individuals naturally clash to establish dominance over the herd. The winner becomes the reina (queen), the leader who guides the others during the transhumance. This natural instinct inspired the competition, where two cows face off by pushing with their horns: the winner is the one who manages to push her opponent back, without ever causing injury.

A year-long circuit

The Cantoira final is the culmination of a series of qualifying rounds hosted by various towns in the valley and the Canavese area. Throughout the season, these matches select the best cows in each category, leading up to the final showdown. The event is promoted by the J'amis d'le Reines d'le Val ad Lans association, with the patronage of the Piedmont Region, the Metropolitan City of Turin, the Municipality of Cantoira, and local agricultural unions.

A village festival of tradition and gastronomy

The day is more than just a competition; it is a true popular mountain festival. In the morning, the cows are weighed, checked by the jury, and divided into categories. In the early afternoon, the matches begin, accompanied by the cheers of breeders and spectators. Around the arena, you will find food stalls featuring local specialties, as well as displays of traditional crafts and agricultural equipment. The award ceremony presents the winning queens with the famous collar with a cowbell and the final victory trophy.

Why it is worth visiting

More than just a spectacle, the Bataja dle Reines is a rite of identity for the Lanzo Valleys: it tells the story of the deep bond between mountain communities, livestock farming, and alpine life. It is also a precious opportunity for young breeders to proudly showcase the fruits of their hard work. For visitors, it is a chance to immerse themselves in an authentic tradition, surrounded by alpine landscapes, genuine flavors, and the warm atmosphere of a true village festival.
