The Saint Michael the Archangel feast on the hills of Gassino Torinese
Bardassano is a small hillside village in the municipality of Gassino Torinese, in the Province of Turin, overlooking the gentle slopes that dominate the Po plain. Every year, on the last weekend of September, the village comes alive for its Patronal Festival in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel, the saint to whom the village's parish church is dedicated. It is one of those Piedmontese village festivals that preserve the identity of a community: no pretense of grandeur, just plenty of authenticity, tradition, and a desire to be together.
The religious heart of the festival is the church of San Michele, next to which the ancient bell tower stands tall. The three bells of Bardassano are one of the village's hallmarks: they are played by hand using keyboards restored in recent years, and the traditional bell concert on the patronal Sunday attracts campanology enthusiasts from all over the region. It is a rare and evocative moment that inextricably links the festival to the history and landscape of the hills.
The festival takes place over a weekend, usually between Saturday and Sunday. Saturday evening kicks off the celebrations with live music, aperitifs, and food platters at the refreshment stand; Sunday is the highlight, with the opening of exhibitions and the market in the morning, food stalls serving traditional Piedmontese dishes, children's games in the afternoon, and musical events in the evening. Past editions have also featured a refined chamber concert in the castle chapel, testifying to the community's dedication to the cultural aspect of the festival.
The Bardassano Patronal Festival is organized by the village's Festivities Committee, with the patronage of the Gassino Torinese municipal administration and the collaboration of the local Pro Loco. It is the perfect example of how, in Piedmont, small villages keep their traditions alive through volunteer work and attachment to the town. The Saint Michael Festival at the castle of Bardassano is also listed in the regional register of historical re-enactments and traditions.
Visiting Bardassano during its patronal festival means discovering a little-known corner of the Turin hills, far from the main tourist flows. Between the scent of traditional dishes, the sound of the bells, and the genuine atmosphere of a village feast, it is an ideal occasion for those seeking the most authentic Italy, the one of small villages that resist the passage of time. A day trip easily reached from Turin and its surrounding area.
