Five days of Canavese flavors centered on Savoy cabbage, featuring bagna caôda, the Palio dei Comuni, and local traditions.
The Montalto Dora Savoy Cabbage Festival is one of the most cherished autumn events in the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheater, in the Metropolitan City of Turin. Born in 1996 to showcase a high-quality agricultural product grown for generations in the lands of the Canavese, the festival has grown while keeping its authentic character and respect for tradition intact. Every year, at the end of November, the small village overlooking the morainic lakes comes alive for five days of food, wine, sports, music, and folklore.
The heart of the festival is, of course, the Savoy cabbage, a humble yet versatile vegetable that here becomes the key ingredient in ancient, flavorful dishes. At the stands managed by local associations and the restaurants of the Canavese Tradition, visitors can taste specialties such as supa 'd pan e còj (bread and cabbage soup), the famous bagna caôda, and capônèt, delicious cabbage leaf rolls. Themed evenings, ranging from the opening dinner dedicated to local excellence to the bagna caôda night with guest chefs, set the pace for the festival.
Among the most anticipated events is the Palio dei Comuni, which sees towns from the Canavese region compete in spectacular horse-drawn carriage races, with heats held in the morning and afternoon. The final Sunday is dedicated to the grand fair: a market featuring local products, second-hand goods, antiques, crafts, and stalls that fill the village streets from the early morning hours.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover the local area: the free "Cavolo che tour!" guided hikes take visitors to Lake Coniglio, the Terre Ballerine, Lake Nero, and Monte del Maggio, while the Lago Pistono archaeological park opens its doors with guided tours and workshops. There is no shortage of concerts, conferences on natural parks, and activities dedicated to children. It is a celebration in Montalto Dora, in the province of Turin and the Canavese Piedmont, that weaves together taste, landscape, and local identity.
