A gourmet walking tour through the hills of Barbera d'Asti and the home of the Motta square pepper
Stramangiando Spring Edition is the spring appointment with the gourmet walking tour organized by the Pro Loco of Motta, a hamlet in the municipality of Costigliole d'Asti, in the province of Asti, in the heart of Piedmont. It is a non-competitive, multi-stage walk that combines the pleasure of discovering the hilly landscape with the delights of fine dining, featuring stops at local wineries, farmhouses, and estates.
The trail consists of seven stages, starting and ending at the Motta sports field, following a loop of approximately 13-15 kilometers immersed in nature. From the plains along the Tanaro, the land of the Motta square pepper, the path climbs through the vineyards and woods of the Barbera d'Asti hills. For those who prefer not to walk the entire route, a shuttle service is available to connect the various stops.
Each stage features a dish of Piedmontese cuisine prepared by local producers. Specialties featured in past editions include friciula with lard, vitello tonnato, Fassona beef tartare, gnocchi with sausage sauce, and bunet, the classic Monferrato spoon dessert. The dishes are accompanied by wines from participating wineries, starting with Barbera d'Asti.
Founded in 2022, Stramangiando has quickly become one of the most popular gastronomic walks in the Asti area, attracting hundreds of participants each year. Its success has encouraged the Pro Loco of Motta to offer an autumn edition in addition to the Spring Edition. The event highlights local products and the agricultural landscape of Costigliole d'Asti, offering residents and visitors a convivial day of nature, taste, and Monferrato tradition.
The Stramangiando Spring Edition 2026 was held on Sunday, May 3, 2026, starting and finishing at the sports field in the hamlet of Motta, Costigliole d'Asti. The seven-stage route crossed vineyards and hills, offering a traditional Piedmontese dish paired with local wines at every stop.
