About Moscato Trail

The Moscato d'Asti Trail is a major trail running event that transforms the hills of Santo Stefano Belbo, in the province of Cuneo, into a stage for thousands of runners every autumn. Based in the hometown of author Cesare Pavese, the event offers races ranging from 10 to 106 km through the UNESCO-listed Moscato d'Asti vineyards, as well as nordic walking, food and wine walks, and children's races. Three days of sport, landscape, and culture in the heart of the Piedmontese Langhe.

The great trail of the Moscato hills

The Moscato d'Asti Trail is the most important trail running event in the Belbo Valley and a benchmark race in the Piedmont running calendar. It takes place in Santo Stefano Belbo, a town in the province of Cuneo overlooking the hills bordering the Asti area, and attracts athletes from all over Italy and abroad every year. Organized by the A.S.D. Dynamic Center Valle Belbo, the event has grown into a three-day celebration that combines competition, nature, and local culture.

In the UNESCO-listed wine landscape

The routes wind through the rows of Moscato d'Asti vines, within the "Piedmont Vineyard Landscapes: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato," recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Hilltops, vineyards, hazelnut groves, and ancient paths create one of the most evocative trails in the Italian landscape, with views stretching across the Langhe and, on clear days, as far as the Alps. The race is a unique way to traverse one of the world's most celebrated wine regions on foot.

The races: from 10 to 106 kilometers

The competitive program, inspired by the works of Cesare Pavese, who was born in Santo Stefano Belbo, includes various distances suitable for every level of preparation:

  • Magistra LangaRum — Ultra Trail of approximately 106 km with 5,000 meters of elevation gain, the flagship race crossing the UNESCO hills;
  • Lavorare Stanca — Trail of approximately 54 km with 2,800 meters of elevation gain;
  • Paesi Tuoi — Trail of approximately 21 km with 1,000 meters of elevation gain;
  • Sali Scendi — Short Trail of approximately 10 km with 450 meters of elevation gain.

Alongside the competitive races, there is a non-competitive walk, nordic walking routes, a food and wine walk through the cellars, and a Kids Fun Run, making the event a festival open to the whole family.

Sport, wine, and culture in the Langhe

The Moscato Trail is more than just a race: it is an opportunity to discover the food and wine of the Langhe, from local wines to traditional products, and to experience the atmosphere of a village tied to Pavese's literary legacy. Refreshment points along the routes and the race pack showcase local excellence, while the town comes alive to welcome runners and their companions for a festive weekend.

A late September appointment

The event is traditionally held at the end of September, during the grape harvest, when the hills of the Municipality of Santo Stefano Belbo and the Piedmont Region are colored by the tones of autumn. It is the ideal time to combine a passion for hill running with the discovery of one of Italy's most beloved landscapes.
