The autumn and mountain flavors festival in Fanano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
'Ste Sroden is the festival celebrating autumn and its flavors in Fanano, a small village in the Apennines in the Province of Modena, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, at the foot of Monte Cimone. The curious name comes from the local dialect and means, more or less, "this autumn": an affectionate phrase that summarizes the convivial spirit of the event, filled with good food, tradition, and mountain air.
The absolute stars are the typical products of the Apennine autumn: chestnuts in the first place, the true soul of the Fanano territory, but also mushrooms, pumpkin, and wine. In the historic center and in Piazza Corsini, the town's restaurateurs create a sort of 'scattered restaurant', where you can taste traditional specialties: mondine (roasted chestnuts), berlenghi, crescentine (fried dough), and dishes prepared according to ancient mountain recipes.
The event usually takes place over a weekend in October. Saturday, often announced as "Waiting for 'Ste Sroden", is dedicated to excursions and walks to discover the forests and the ancient chestnut culture: guided treks, foliage walks, chestnut picking in the groves, and the evocative lunch at the metato, in the traditional drying houses where the fruit was once dried. There are also activities for children, workshops, and live music in the evening.
Sunday is the heart of the festival: restaurants set up in the square with their specialties, while the village comes alive with craft markets, street artists, traditional band music, and guided tours of the historic center and Fanano's most characteristic places.
'Ste Sroden is also the perfect opportunity to visit Fanano and its surroundings: the medieval historic center, the numerous fountains and sculptures, and the trails leading up to the Frignano Park and Monte Cimone. An authentic festival, designed for those who love the mountains, genuine flavors, and the welcoming atmosphere of the small villages of the Emilian Apennines.
For 2026, 'Ste Sroden is scheduled for the weekend of October 17-18, confirming its usual autumn placement in the historic center of Fanano. This year too, the program should be divided into two days, featuring guided excursions, chestnut picking, lunch at the metato, a 'scattered restaurant' in Piazza Corsini, markets, music, and family activities.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published, and the dates are awaiting final confirmation. For updated information, please contact the Fanano Tourist Office IAT (tel. 0536 68696, [email protected]).
Fanano is located in the upper Modenese Apennines. By car, from Modena, take the SS12 and then the SP4 towards Sestola-Fanano (about 60 km). The nearest useful train station is Modena, from which you can continue by bus or car towards the Apennines.

Admission to the festival is generally free; some guided excursions and tastings may require a small contribution. In autumn, temperatures in the mountains can be cool: layered clothing and comfortable shoes for walking are recommended.
