Autumn Sundays in the heart of the Modena Apennines, between roasted chestnuts and typical marrone chestnuts
The Festival of the Typical Chestnut and Marrone of Zocca is one of the most cherished autumn events in the Modena Apennines. It takes place in the historic center of the Municipality of Zocca, in the Province of Modena (Emilia-Romagna), and traditionally unfolds over the Sundays in October, when the village transforms into a large exhibition-market dedicated to the fruit that has always represented the identity of this territory. In 2026, the event returns for three Sundays, with a historic center closed to traffic and enlivened by over a hundred stalls spread over thousands of square meters.
The heart of the festival is the Zocca Marrone, a prized variety protected by the "Tradition and Flavors of Modena" brand, larger and more aromatic than common chestnuts and closely linked to the mountain's peasant culture. Along the village streets, you can enjoy the unmissable roasted chestnuts cooked in large perforated pans, but also castagnaccio (chestnut cake), ciacci (chestnut crepes), desserts made with chestnut flour, and typical Apennine specialties like borlenghi (thin savory crepes) and crescentine (fried dough), accompanied by cured meats and mountain cheeses.
Alongside gastronomy, the festival offers a rich exhibition-market with typical products, agricultural produce, artisanal items, and stalls dedicated to local excellences. It's the ideal opportunity to meet local producers, discover chestnuts in their myriad forms, and take home a taste of the Modena Apennines.
The festive atmosphere is completed by live music, entertainment, and activities for all ages, making the day enjoyable for families too. A short walk from the festival, enthusiasts can delve deeper into local culture by visiting the Museum of the Chestnut and Borlengo, which recounts the deep connection between Zocca, the chestnut, and its traditional recipes through educational exhibits.
The Festival of the Typical Chestnut and Marrone of Zocca is organized by the Pro Loco Zocchese. Admission is free, and the stands are open from morning until evening. It's a perfect event for an autumn outing to discover the Municipality of Zocca and the genuine flavors of the Modena mountains.
The dates for the 2026 edition are official: Sundays, October 11, 18, and 25, with continuous hours from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM in the historic center of Zocca. The festival fills the town streets with over one hundred stalls dedicated to typical products derived from chestnuts, food products, agricultural, and artisanal goods.
As every year, the stars will be the roasted chestnuts, castagnaccio, ciacci, borlenghi, and crescentine, alongside the exhibition-market and entertainment. The schedule of concerts, entertainment, and activities will be communicated by the Pro Loco Zocchese closer to the event.
Zocca is located in the Modena Apennines, in the Province of Modena. By car, it can be reached from the plains via the provincial roads leading up from Vignola and the Panaro Valley. From the train stations of Modena or Vignola, continue by bus or car towards the main town.
