The alpine patronal feast of St. Oswald in Meran 2000, above Avelengo
The St. Oswald Kirchtag is one of the most evocative traditional festivals in South Tyrol, celebrated every year on August 5th, the feast day of St. Oswald, on the high-altitude meadows of the Meran 2000 area, in the municipality of Avelengo/Hafling, in the province of Bolzano (Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol). It is not a festival in the modern sense, but an authentic Kirchtag: a mountain patronal feast that intertwines faith, rural folklore, and conviviality.
Devotion to St. Oswald, patron saint of livestock and pastures, dates back to the 15th century, but the feast originated from a vow made in 1641 by the farmers of Avelengo, who pledged to build a chapel at the foot of Mount Picco Ivigna (Ifinger) and to hike there in procession every year on the saint's day. The original chapel stood for nearly two and a half centuries until the construction of the current building in 1879, which stands at approximately 2,365 meters above sea level in a panoramic position on the Sarntal Alps.
The celebration follows a ritual unchanged for generations:
The Kirchtag retains a genuinely communal character: participants are primarily residents of Avelengo and the surrounding valleys, but the feast is open to all hikers and tourists reaching Meran 2000. The high-mountain setting, the mass celebrated outdoors among the pastures, and the traditional music in the huts offer the most authentic image of the alpine culture of the Merano Burgraviato. It is an ideal occasion to combine hiking, popular spirituality, and mountain hut gastronomy.
The St. Oswald chapel can be reached from Falzeben or the Meran 2000 mountain station, served by the cable car from Merano and the chairlift from Falzeben, followed by about an hour's walk on marked trails. The event is organized by Bergbahnen Meran 2000 in collaboration with the Avelengo community.
The St. Oswald Kirchtag 2026 is scheduled for Wednesday, August 5th, in the Meran 2000 area, in the municipality of Avelengo/Hafling (Bolzano). The day begins at 8:00 AM with the traditional procession from the mountain station towards the St. Oswald chapel, continues at 9:30 AM with the open-air field mass, and culminates in the afternoon with live music and festivities in the mountain huts, particularly at the Kuhleitenhütte and Kirchsteiger Alm. The event is organized by Bergbahnen Meran 2000.
The meeting point is the Meran 2000 mountain station, reachable by cable car from Merano or by chairlift from Falzeben (Avelengo). From the mountain station, about an hour's walk on marked trails leads to the St. Oswald chapel at 2,365 m.
Every year on August 5th, St. Oswald's Day. Procession at 8:00 AM, field mass at 9:30 AM.
Bring hiking boots, layered clothing, and sun protection: the event takes place outdoors at high altitude. In case of bad weather, check for any changes with Bergbahnen Meran 2000.
