About Crocifisso di Padre Pirrelli Festival

The SS. Crocifisso di Padre Pirrelli Festival is one of the most heartfelt traditions in San Cataldo, in the province of Caltanissetta. Celebrated on the fourth Sunday after Easter, it has roots dating back to 1851, blending faith, folklore, and collective memory for over 170 years. The papier-mâché statue, kept in the Church of Santo Stefano, is carried on a heavy 19th-century Baroque float by twelve members of the Committee, amidst votive breads, wheat stalks, and the evocative wheat collection on horseback.

A devotion spanning over 170 years

The SS. Crocifisso di Padre Pirrelli Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious traditions in San Cataldo, a town in the province of Caltanissetta, in the heart of inland Sicily. It is celebrated every year on the fourth Sunday after Easter and represents an unbreakable bond between spirituality, folklore, and collective memory for the local community.

The origins: Father Rosario Pirrelli and the miraculous event

The festival began in 1851 through the work of Father Rosario Pirrelli, an ascetic and parish priest of the Church of Santo Stefano. As early as 1845, the priest had purchased a house adjacent to the Oratory and had a chapel built to house the Crucifix he venerated. The tradition is linked to an episode considered miraculous: during a severe drought, Father Pirrelli led the faithful in prayer, invoking the intercession of the Crucifix, and shortly thereafter, the long-awaited rain finally fell. Since then, the Crucifix, affectionately called by the locals 'U Crucifissu di patri Pirriddu, has been the object of profound devotion.

The statue and the Baroque float

The papier-mâché statue is kept in the Church of Santo Stefano, where the remains of Father Pirrelli are also preserved. During the procession, it is placed on a heavy 19th-century Baroque float, carried on the shoulders of the twelve members of the Committee through the streets of the historic center.

The day's rituals

The festival unfolds in several stages throughout the morning and afternoon:

  • Wheat collection (Questua del frumento): To the sound of the brass band, the Committee members ride through the town on richly decorated horses, collecting offerings of money and wheat.
  • Offertory procession: Women and children parade, carrying finely decorated votive breads, flowers, and wheat stalks as gifts.
  • Solemn Eucharistic celebration at the parish of Santo Stefano.
  • Procession of the Crucifix in the afternoon, accompanied by the march "Ah sì, versate lacrime" and the traditional maschiàta, the fireworks display that closes the day.
  • Blessing of the children and the bread in the presence of the many faithful.

A heritage of San Cataldo

Beyond its religious dimension, the festival is an identity-defining occasion for the entire community of San Cataldo and the Sicilian province of Caltanissetta: an appointment that, since the mid-19th century, has preserved gestures, songs, and symbols passed down from generation to generation, continuing to attract devotees and visitors every year.
