Popular devotion in San Cataldo on the fourth Sunday after Easter
The SS. Crocifisso di Padre Pirrelli Festival is one of the most deeply rooted religious traditions in San Cataldo, a town in the province of Caltanissetta, in the heart of inland Sicily. It is celebrated every year on the fourth Sunday after Easter and represents an unbreakable bond between spirituality, folklore, and collective memory for the local community.
The festival began in 1851 through the work of Father Rosario Pirrelli, an ascetic and parish priest of the Church of Santo Stefano. As early as 1845, the priest had purchased a house adjacent to the Oratory and had a chapel built to house the Crucifix he venerated. The tradition is linked to an episode considered miraculous: during a severe drought, Father Pirrelli led the faithful in prayer, invoking the intercession of the Crucifix, and shortly thereafter, the long-awaited rain finally fell. Since then, the Crucifix, affectionately called by the locals 'U Crucifissu di patri Pirriddu, has been the object of profound devotion.
The papier-mâché statue is kept in the Church of Santo Stefano, where the remains of Father Pirrelli are also preserved. During the procession, it is placed on a heavy 19th-century Baroque float, carried on the shoulders of the twelve members of the Committee through the streets of the historic center.
The festival unfolds in several stages throughout the morning and afternoon:
Beyond its religious dimension, the festival is an identity-defining occasion for the entire community of San Cataldo and the Sicilian province of Caltanissetta: an appointment that, since the mid-19th century, has preserved gestures, songs, and symbols passed down from generation to generation, continuing to attract devotees and visitors every year.
The 2026 edition of the SS. Crocifisso di Padre Pirrelli Festival was celebrated on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in San Cataldo, in keeping with the tradition that sets it on the fourth Sunday after Easter.
The day followed the usual schedule: in the morning, the wheat collection, with Committee members on horseback accompanied by the brass band, and the offertory procession of women and children with votive breads, flowers, and wheat stalks. In the afternoon, after the Eucharistic celebration in the Church of Santo Stefano, the procession of the Crucifix took place with the papier-mâché statue on the Baroque float, concluded by the traditional pyrotechnic maschiàta and the blessing of the children and the bread.
