The patronal feast of Bompensiere, blending faith and tradition in the heart of the Caltanissetta area
Bompensiere is the least populated municipality in the province of Caltanissetta, a village of just over six hundred souls nestled in the hills of the Sicilian hinterland. Once a year, at the end of September, this small town rediscovers its identity during the Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix, the celebration of the patron saint that for generations has marked the end of summer and brought together residents, returning emigrants, and visitors.
The focal point of the celebrations is the Mother Church of the Most Holy Crucifix, built in the 17th century and the village's main monument. Inside, it houses a canvas attributed to Pietro D'Asaro, a Sicilian painter from the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and is distinguished by its portal topped by a bell tower. This is where the three-day preparation period takes place, starting the preceding Thursday, guiding the faithful with the rosary, Eucharistic adoration, the Stations of the Cross, and Eucharistic celebrations leading up to the Sunday festival.
On the main day, the morning is heralded by a marching band parading through the streets, followed by Solemn Mass. In the late afternoon, the most anticipated moment begins: the procession of the Crucifix statue along the so-called 'Via dei Santi' (Way of the Saints), accompanied by the devotion of the entire community. Religious rites are complemented by traditional blessings and moments of social gathering.
Alongside the sacred dimension, there is plenty of popular entertainment: theatrical and musical performances enliven the evenings, traditional fireworks light up the village sky, and the streets fill with the aromas of local cooking. It is the perfect opportunity to taste Bompensiere's specialties, such as mbriulati (pastries filled with onion, sausage, and olives) and pizzetto, a traditional local gelato dessert.
More than just a simple festival, the Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix is the annual story of Bompensiere and inland Sicily: an ideal snapshot of community life where faith, historical memory, and conviviality intertwine. For those visiting the province of Caltanissetta, it is an authentic opportunity to discover the Sicily of small villages, far from mass tourism circuits.
The patronal Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix returns to Bompensiere on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The structure of the festival follows the usual format: in the preceding days, a triduum is held in the Mother Church with the rosary, Eucharistic adoration, and celebrations; on Sunday morning, a marching band parades through the village streets, followed by Solemn Mass and, in the late afternoon, the procession of the statue along the Via dei Santi. The evenings are enlivened by performances, fireworks, and local gastronomic specialties.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including precise times for celebrations and entertainment events, will be announced by the Parish of the Most Holy Crucifix in the weeks leading up to the festival.
