The patronal feast of Montedoro that brings the village and its emigrants together on the first Sunday of August
The Saint Joseph Festival is the most important celebration in Montedoro, a village perched at an altitude of 450 meters in the hinterland of the Province of Caltanissetta, in Sicily. Saint Joseph is venerated here as a co-patron, and according to tradition, solemn festivities have been held in his honor since the village's founding in 1635. Since then, the devotion has never wavered, becoming the moment when the entire Montedoro community gathers around its saint.
Since 1945, the festival has been held on the first Sunday of August: a choice linked to the village's history of emigration, designed to allow Montedoro natives who moved abroad or to Northern Italy to return and participate in the festivities during their summer holidays. For this reason, the celebration concludes with the Emigrant Festival, an event dedicated to the memory and welcome of those returning to their native land, the true identity heart of the entire manifestation.
The day of the festival is announced early in the morning by cannon fire and the traditional tour of the brass band and the Sicilian cart for the ritiro delle 'ntorce (collection of the candles), the offerings of the faithful. This is followed by the pontifical mass in the Mother Church. In the evening, the solemn procession of the statue of Saint Joseph begins, accompanied by the band along the characteristic 'Vie dei Santi' (Streets of the Saints) of the historic center, starting and ending at the church.
In the days leading up to the festival Sunday, the village square hosts shows, entertainment, and various artistic performances: band concerts, musical evenings, cabaret, theatrical performances, and the customary singing festival. Recent editions have enriched the program with flag-waver shows, equestrian performances, DJ sets, and popular theater moments, transforming the religious feast into a true week of events for all ages.
Participating in the Saint Joseph Festival in Montedoro means immersing yourself in the most authentic traditions of inland Sicily: popular faith, the sounds of the band, the flavors of local cuisine, and the warmth of a community that, once a year, reconnects with its roots. An ideal opportunity to discover a village in the province of Caltanissetta far from mass tourism circuits.
The 2026 Saint Joseph Festival in Montedoro will culminate on Sunday, August 2, 2026, the first Sunday of the month, following the tradition that has set the festival in this period since 1945 to welcome emigrants returning to the village.
The events that mark the festival every year are confirmed: the collection of the 'ntorce announced by cannon fire, the solemn procession of the Saint Joseph statue through the 'Vie dei Santi', and the Emigrant Festival as the closing event. The complete program of shows, concerts, and evenings in the square will be announced by the festival committee shortly before the event.
Montedoro can be reached by car from the SS640 Caltanissetta-Agrigento road, exiting towards the hinterland; the village is about 30 km from Caltanissetta. The nearest train station is in Caltanissetta, from where you can continue by car or local bus connections.
The festivities last several days and culminate on the first Sunday of August. Religious celebrations take place in the Mother Church and along the streets of the historic center.
Access to events in the square and religious celebrations is free of charge.
