The Feast of the Assumption of Mary is among the most cherished traditions for the community of San Cataldo, located in the heart of the Caltanissetta province in Sicily. Its origins date back to the mid-18th century and are deeply tied to the Marian devotion that defines the local religious calendar. Since 1950, the year Pope Pius XII proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption of Mary into heaven, body and soul, the festival has taken on an even more solemn significance for the faithful.
The symbolic heart of the celebration is the ancient wax statue of the Madonna Assunta, which depicts the "dormitio Virginis," or the Dormition of the Virgin. Normally kept in the right transept of the San Cataldo Cathedral, it is displayed to the faithful starting on the last Sunday of July, officially kicking off the festivities. During the August 15th procession, the 1957 wooden statue is carried in triumph, having joined the ancient wax effigy in popular veneration over the years.
From July 31st to August 14th, the "quindicina di preghiera" (fifteen days of prayer) takes place in honor of the Assumption. Every day at 5:30 PM in the Mother Church, the Holy Rosary is recited, led by various parish groups; at 6:00 PM, following the singing of the Litany to the Madonna, Holy Mass is celebrated. It is a time of reflection that prepares the community for the solemnity of August 15th.
On August 14th, the eve of the solemnity, the Litany is sung at the Church of San Francesco "Ex-Cappuccini", followed by a solemn Mass and a floral tribute to the Madonna. On August 15th, the day of the Assumption, the festival reaches its peak: twenty-one cannon shots and the festive ringing of bells announce the solemnity, followed by a solemn Mass in Piazza Madrice at 7:30 PM. The procession of the Madonna then travels through the main streets of the town center, accompanied by the entire community, concluding with a traditional fireworks display in front of the Church of San Francesco, which brings the festivities to a spectacular close.
The Feast of the Assumption is much more than a liturgical recurrence: it represents a moment of strong cohesion for the residents of San Cataldo and for the many emigrants who return to the town specifically for the Ferragosto holiday. Blending faith, tradition, and popular celebration, the Assumption remains one of the most anticipated events of the summer in the Caltanissetta region, drawing devotees and visitors from across the entire province.
The 2026 edition of the Feast of the Assumption in San Cataldo (Caltanissetta) does not yet have an official calendar. Based on established tradition, the festivities will likely follow the usual schedule: the fifteen days of prayer in the Mother Church, the vigil on August 14th at the Church of San Francesco "Ex-Cappuccini," and the solemnity of August 15th with the procession and fireworks display. The detailed program, including times and celebrations, will be released by the parish closer to the event.
The festivities take place between the Mother Church (Piazza Madrice) and the Church of San Francesco "Ex-Cappuccini" in San Cataldo (CL), as well as along the main streets of the center during the procession.
San Cataldo is located a few kilometers from Caltanissetta, along the SS640 highway. By car, it can be reached from the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (take the exits toward Caltanissetta). The most convenient train station is Caltanissetta Centrale, which is connected to the town by local bus services.
Admission to religious celebrations and the procession is free. The highlight is the evening of August 15th, with the procession and fireworks: we recommend arriving early to attend Mass in Piazza Madrice and secure a good spot along the route.
