The ficazzole, the panierini, and the bamboline of Oliveto Lucano
The Spring Festival is one of the most characteristic events in Oliveto Lucano, a village in the Province of Matera in the heart of the Lucanian Dolomites. Organized by Pro Loco Olea, the event promotes local gastronomic specialties, particularly baked goods, and highlights the artisanal craftsmanship stemming from a precious tradition of the past.
Visitors embark on a journey to discover three symbolic specialties of the festival. Ficazzole are savory or sweet-and-sour tarts based on cheese, cured meats, ricotta, and eggs. Panierini are made with the same ingredients, but with an egg placed in the center, embellished with pastry frills and confetti in sweet spring colors. And it is from the leftover dough of ficazzole and panierini that the skilled hands of the women of Oliveto Lucano create the bamboline, placed on reed structures and decorated with frills, fringes, and colorful confetti.
The day unfolds with demonstration workshops on the preparation of these products, a guided tour of the historic center, and an excursion to the archaeological site of Monte Croccia, an ancient fortified settlement overlooking the area. Stands display the specialties made by Pro Loco Olea, while folk music, cultural moments, and the Spring Lottery liven up the afternoon until evening.
The Spring Festival is the ideal opportunity to discover Oliveto Lucano outside the period of the famous Maggio Olivetese, immersed in the aromas of peasant cuisine and the natural setting of the Gallipoli Cognato Park and the Lucanian Dolomites.
