The Cuccia, Saint Lucia's Dish
In Castelmezzano, a jewel of the Lucanian Dolomites in the Province of Potenza, on December 13th, Saint Lucia's Day, a tradition passed down for over a century is renewed: the Sagra della Cuccia. The "cuccia" is an ancient, humble dish, made with wheat, fava beans, chickpeas, and vetch, a symbol of peasant cuisine and the gifts of the earth, linked to devotion to the saint protector of sight.
A Ritual Between Faith and Community
The heart of the festival takes place in front of the Mother Church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo, where the cuccia is cooked in a large cauldron (cauldaro), blessed, and distributed free of charge to all the faithful at the end of Mass, as a sign of good luck and sharing. In 2026, Castelmezzano will again renew, on December 13th for Saint Lucia, the centuries-old Sagra della Cuccia. In front of the Mother Church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo, the cuccia made of wheat, fava beans, chickpeas, and vetch is cooked in the large cauldron, blessed, and distributed free of charge to the faithful as a gesture of good luck and sharing.

How to get there: Castelmezzano can be reached from the SS407 Basentana, exit towards the Basento Valley, continuing along the provincial roads towards the Lucanian Dolomites.
