The Munnaredda chestnut is the star of autumn in Tramutola
When autumn colours the woods of the Val d'Agri, Tramutola celebrates its most precious fruit: the Munnaredda chestnut. This local variety, whose dialectal name refers to how easily it is peeled, has been part of the economy and cuisine of the village in the province of Potenza for centuries. The Proloco Tramutola APS dedicates a festival to it, which, edition after edition, has become a major event for the entire region.
The Munnaredda Chestnut Festival transforms the centre of Tramutola into a journey of autumn flavours. Stalls offer roasted chestnuts and a rich variety of derived products, from sweets to traditional Lucanian dishes, accompanied by wines and specialities from the Val d'Agri. There is also folk music, dancing, and shows that liven up the festival days, making it an occasion for families and visitors to gather.
Having grown over the years to surpass ten editions, the festival has received important quality recognitions that certify its authenticity and link to local produce. It is a virtuous example of how a community can value its agricultural roots, making the Munnaredda chestnut a symbol of identity and tourist promotion for the village.
Visiting Tramutola during the festival means discovering the Val d'Agri in its most evocative period, amidst the colours of the chestnut groves and the hospitality of a town that values conviviality. It's an opportunity to savour Lucanian autumn in its most genuine form.
For 2026 too, Proloco Tramutola APS will again host the Munnaredda Chestnut Festival, traditionally held at the end of October. Previous editions took place on the last weekend of the month (October 24-26 in 2024 and 2025). Stalls will offer roasted chestnuts, derived products, and Val d'Agri specialities, accompanied by folk music and dances.
The programme and precise dates for the 2026 edition will be announced by Proloco Tramutola in autumn. The traditional structure of the festival includes:
